Fake IMEI

Hi,

On Ziphone there is a part that says "fake imei".

Does that mean it changes the imei number? , if so would that mean a network barred iphone could have its imei changed via this and then be able to work in the uk?

Im not 100% sure how that works, but i noticed it too!

I have heard people talking about it on here so do a search.

I would mess around with it tho atleast untill you know what your doing

Yep, that is exactly what it does. But if you restore your baseband it gets reset to the original.

FYI - It is a criminal offence in the UK to tamper with IMEI numbers. Really really not a good idea.

Can we change an iphones imei when unlocked with Winpwn, i think it would be ok if we just press 3.9 bootloader in the bootneuter. Because in ziphone's info when you get your mouse over the imei change section it says only 3.9 bootloader. so i guess it would be ok. But would it go after we pressed 4.6 in the bootneuter(after changing the imei(. any ideas?

i need help with this.

Just to re-iterate this - if you tamper with the EMEI number on a phone in the UK, you face a possible jail sentence of up to 5 years

And wherever you are there is no legitimate reason for changing the IMEI. Would you be happy if you're phone had been stolen knowing it could be re-activated this way?

Wind ya neck in , i have absolutely no intention of changing anybodys imei especially my own. It was just a bit of curiosity!
I know its illegal , hence the reason i wouldnt touch it with a barge pole!

Ziphone doesn't change the IMEI as recorded on the iphone (as its burnt onto a OTP chip) but makes a software change to fool the network into thinking it has a different IMEI.

just because it is illegal and has a relatively high punishment doesn't make any difference whatsoever - about 95% of British teenagers have pirated music of some kind, and the punishment for that includes fines and prison...

I wasn't aiming my response at you or anyone else here!, it was more a comment on why ZiPhone think including it is even necessary. But then having read of the recent debacle with ZiPhone I don't use it any more.

In the UK every time you make a phone call your IMEI is broadcast to the network. This way the network can see exactly what phone you are using to make a phone call.

Your IMEI isn't broadcasted with SMS messages or with data. It's just phone calls from your device.

If a phone is reported stolen or lost then the IMEI is put into a blacklist database accessible to all the networks. This then prevents the stolen/lost phone from being able to be used to make phone calls in that country.

Actually I'm pretty sure every time you try to connect to the UK mobile network your IMEI number is transmitted....As you have to log on before you make a voice, sms or data call then every transmission you make will be recorded against your IMEI and sim card number regardless of type (for accounting purposes if nothing else).
However IIRC one UK network will allow barred mobiles to send/receive texts (or at least used to).

Exactly.

The IMEI blacklist is there for a very good reason - to give consumers the ability to minimize the risk of fraudulent activity being committed against them by locking out their phones in the event they're stolen.

The only people who benefit from the ability to modify IMEI numbers, is thieves who want a way to bypass the lost/stolen phone blacklist.

Few barred stolen phones have their IMEI number spoofed in this way, its too risky. Most of them get broken up for parts or sold abroad where the UK blacklist isn't used.
