I just found out that the touchbar macbook has fake speaker holes. I think this is a terrible design choice and it has got me wondering what other apple products have fake speakers or other design choices.

Does anyone know exactly when they started to do this and when it stopped?

MacBook Pro 13" Touch Bar does have a few holes that are passthrough for sound, the rest are cosmetic to cover the entire area next to the keyboard. Didn't know this either.

Wait until you learn about cosmetic screws on PowerBooks
wow can you tell me which model years? I cant believe someone like Steve Jobs who cared so much about design would opt for that. I thought the madness was Ives doing. One of the principals of Dieter Ram's is "good design is honest"

The existing silicon Macbooks have it too-some holes are for speakers on either side of the keyboard, but many holes are cosmetic and not holes at all.

Yep. Somehow I’ve never noticed this on my 2017 15” MPB with a Touch Bar, but was one of the first things I noticed on my new 16” M3 MBP.

Which ones? I've gotten into the guts of quite a few Apple laptops starting from the G4 Powerbooks. I've never found any screws that were purely cosmetic. I would call some of them optional as you could lose a couple and nothing would fall apart, but they were doing something.
