The Misty Mountains
I just read the PC Gamer (Sept08 issue) Fallout 3 Hands On article. The game is looking outstanding- I am actually excited! And if you are PC challenged, last I read it is also planned for the 360 and PS3.

Yeah I'm pretty pumped about it too - been a huge fan of the series ever since the first Fallout was released all those years ago. For me, there hasn't been any games quite like the first two.

F3 is looking to be Oblivion-in-a-post-apocalyptic-world-on-hyper-steroids-and-then-some ~ some purists Fallout veterans are ragging on Bethsoft for not sticking to the originals - but as a veteran myself - I'm looking at F3 pretty optimistically.

Even if it may not be everything the die-hard fans want it to be - it'll still be a pretty fantabulous game.

My thoughts.

Looks great visually, but usually, in my opionion, companies that put much effort into graphics tend to not put the same effort into gameplay. So, it remains to be seen how Fallout 3 turns out. They developed this game rather quickly, as well.

I played Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion for over a year so you could say I approved really liking the open landscape. Hopefully F3 lives up to Bethesda's former standards.

I'm hoping that F3 lives up to the standards set by F1 & F2. ;)

Wow - being optimistic are we? :p

J/K

Like I said - I'm pretty optimistic that F3 will be a good game, following bethsoft's track record with the TES series (and to a certain extent - the old Terminator games from DOS). Like with Fallout - I was a huge fan of the TES games when I first was exposed to Daggerfall upon its release.

I have no doubt in Bethsoft's ability to make a good game.

Whether it'll be a good Fallout, ah well...

I still like to remain optimistic :D

It's being developed with consoles (the 360 actually) in mind so expect a big ugly severe case of console-itis.

It'll be a great game, I'm just thinking it won't live up to it's predecessor hype (much like Bioshock).

I just hope the Fallout 3 modding community is as extensive as the Oblivion one, Oblivion on PC is 100000x better than Oblivion on consoles for the mods alone.

It's gone gold and will be released by the end of the month.

System requirements are pretty high though - my MacBook Pro doesn't even cut it, and I bought it in February! :(

I only have 128mb of VRAM but min system requirements call for 256mb

I never played much of the old Fallout games since I hated action points with a burning passion, but I hope the story is more focused than Elder Scrolls. I cant even remember what the main story of Oblivion was since I got lost and just stopped playing the story missions. More emphasis on the story would be nice, and please god no weird ass level system that changes the enemies and equipment as you level up.

Actually the requirements are not as bad as they could have been. They're not much more than Oblivion's requirements.

The only good thing to come of these console-ations -- get it... :] -- is that all new games are being optimized for low-end hardware 3+ years out of date. I haven't had any problems running any of this new blah maxed out with V-Sync enabled.

But, who gives a crap about that, when the controls are also being optimized for the undesirable in most cases.

Anyways, Tim Cain is going to play it, but I'm not sure his critical side will like it;

"The biggest problem… is that the original games were designed to make you feel like you were one of the last people left on Earth… With Fallout 3 and the online version, I’m curious about how they’ll handle making the game not feel too crowded–making it feel like there’s not much life left out there after the war.

It’s not necessarily the direction I would’ve gone… I can tell you I have my Fallout 3 pre-ordered… I’m looking forward to Fallout 3 as a consumer, not a developer. I just want to play it and enjoy it."

i think that's the point. They've repeatedly states that you will NOT be constrained by the main storyline, and u can choose to totally ignore it if you want to. That doesn't mean the story's not good, it just means that someone such as yourself is free to get lost and do whatever they want.

I also believe in that in SOME areas, enemy level will correspond to your own, though that's not the case in all areas. I think the idea behind that is that it LETS you move off the storyline by exploring other areas that would otherwise be too high lvl for you at the time.

My iMac is over 2 years old, and I still meet the system requirements. Your macbook pro's stats will be superior to my iMac's except for VRAM, but yours probably has a faster video card. Honestly, Fallout 3 is the first PC game I've seen that actually LISTS the radeon X1600 on the "compatible video cards" list. Most games are fine with it.

What's the actual video card in your macbook pro? I'd still give it a shot with 128 megs - you just might not be able to have the textures set as high.

EDIT:: Jim, I was looking at this article, and it looks like the LOW-end macbook pro even came with 256 megs of VRAM in February. You sure yours only has 128?

I know thats the point and that it may be a positive feature, but I always thought JRPG's handled it better. They had tons of sidequests but the main storyline was still important and as you went through the main story it changed the world based on the events that happened. The Oblivion story just didnt feel important, nothing felt important, while I had fun wandering around there was nothing that stuck out as memorable because the stories just werent that big a deal since they didnt affect anything. So it would be nice if the main story actually had some importance this time around while still retaining the open ended sidequests.

As for the leveling I really dont think there is any redeeming factor about that system. I thought it practically ruined the game, if not for cheats on the PC version I wouldnt have played it for more than a couple days. It may allow you to wander to the farthest parts of the world in the very beginning of the game but why is that a good thing? Especially if all you find after your journey is some crappy leather armor. I'll be really disappointed if they left that in, hopefully they listened to all the complaints and made it so you can get good equipment at a low level if you try really hard and get killed in one hit if you wander into a zone you arent ready for.

I don't agree. Bethesda has a very high standard of quality. I have not found any of the games they make suffer from any console-itis.

And bioshock didn't what!? Didn't live up to it's hype? That's the best shooter I've played since...well forever! prolly since FEAR. And FEAR scared the sh*t our of me. I LOVED IT.

I played Oblivion on my PC and if I had no access to the mods like Pretty People (whatever it's called), Saddle Bags, No Psychic Guards, and Call Steed, it still would have been a good game, but the mods did do wonders. I still wonder why Bethesda populated Cyrodiil with so many UGLY people... At least I could get a decent looking character via mods. :)

So I'll have to ponder again should I play FO on my 360 or PC. Hmm.

I never saw the console version of Oblivion so I don't know how different the two versions are. I'd say the PC version of Oblivion did not suffer from consolitis. It seemed pretty nice.

Thats another thing about Oblivion, all the characters were ugly. Their face generation thing might have been a good idea in theory but it just made all the women look horrible with mannish features. Fallout 3 is looking better in that department but there hasnt been enough screenshots to really tell.

Would you rather snipe enemies with a controller or with a mouse?

Would you rather actually control your shots, or let a console's aim-assist help you out because you can't aim accurately on your own with it?
(i don't know if this game has aim-assist in it, but i'm assuming that the console versions will, since that seems to be the norm).

I will admit that console versions are often smoother (minimal number of hardware configurations to deal with; everyone's using the same thing) but the mouse is the big winner for me. If the xbox supported it I'd have already purchased one... but it doesn't (at least not natively), so I'm willing to wait for the Windows port of halo 3, for example (which I still hold out hope for, though I'm starting to doubt it a tiny bit since Halo 3 Recon was announced. I don't want Microsoft to pull the crap it did with Halo 2 Vista and release it 1-2 months before Halo 3 came out on Xbox).

When I say console versions are smoother I'm referring to the graphics. But Fallout 3 is being developed simultaneously for PC and consoles, so it's not like it's an afterthought port, and the system requirements don't look horrible; my iMac's over 2 years old (30 months) but still meets the system reqs

Anyway, I'm gonna stop derailing the thread.

You don't think the UI was badly optimized for a mouse interface? What about the world adapting to your level? The hand holding quest system and fast traveling? The whole equipment, loot and monster table system? Oblivion was good but it was beyond dumbed down.

Have you played System Shock 2? If you haven't then you simply don't know what I'm talking about. Bioshock is a good game but it's also dumbed down.

FEAR was good I'll give you that ;)

He is obviously young.

I find it best to look at Oblivion as a console action game - that way you can forgive the one-dimensional quests, huge but meaningless world, complete lack of meaningful role-playing infrastructure, and so on. As a console action game that got a decent PC port, it is pretty darn good. As a 'real' RPG it is sad and laughable.

The Fallout games are true classics of the RPG genre, and it is a legitimate concern for fans of the franchise as to what Bethesda will do with it. 'Oblivion With Guns' is a legit fear - but I write for RPGWatch and my dealings with Bethesda on this game has raised my confidence to the point I have Fallout 3 pre-ordered. I think it will be fun and offer enough depth and humor to satisfy hardcore fans while having enough mindless action to make Oblivion fans and console gamers happy.
