I just got this over the weekend...

Is it false hope to think that maybe the new iPad Pro will be announced next week as a "Just one more thing"?

If it's just a faster processor and more RAM (a respectable spec bump for a Pro product) then it could be...

...but the iPad Pro is a spotlight product. Worthy of making a fuss about with it's own event. Along with a possible 16" MBP plus the 10.2" budget iPad there could be an event.

They could bulk up the event with demos of apps like Photoshop for iPad now that it's entered the hemisphere and will land soon...

The 11 and 12.9 Pro are already insanely powerful beasts. It wouldn’t do much good to release new ones when people who own one spent $1,000+ on their current 2018 Pro. Fork over hundreds of dollars for a new Pro with a 10-15% increase in single-core scores. Doesn’t make sense to me but others have different opinions.

Photoshop and after effects video editing etc. Will need a baseline 8GB RAM to function responsively so my next iPad Pro in 2021 needs to have 8GB LPDDR5 RAM. Since Samsung is already putting 12GB LPDDR4 RAM in the Note 10 Plus and is already taking orders specially from Apple for new LPDDR5 RAM

The RAM speeds alone will make the 2021 iPad Pro desktop class IMO.

Whatever releases in 2019 won’t have this next generation RAM

It does make sense as that could be an 8GB model. I’m holding from buying an iPad Pro as it does feel like an update is imminent.

I know the industry standard is Adobe, and that will be the case for the foreseeable future, but I decided I don't want to pay the subscription and have moved on to Affinity Designer/Photo, and soon Publisher too. Affinity has some functionality gaps to fill in to fully match up to Adobe, but they're catching up fast. At this point, I'm now used to working in the Affnity apps with my Apple Pencil and I couldn't imagine doing it any other way. From my perspective, Adobe is about a year too late to pick me up as a user on the iPad.

Why would the iPad 'need' 8GB of RAM when it's running specific optimised apps? Doesn't make sense, these aren't PCs that require a big overhead to run, they're a completely different thing. I think Samsung puts large RAM in their phones because A) they don't control the OS, so need the overhead. And B) I think it's probably cheaper for them to produce certain chips, and claim "WOW, look! So much RAM!".

Also if they do come out with an upgraded iPad, why does everyone assume that people who just brought one will need to fork out money to buy the next? It's not for them, the new iPad is for new users, if they don't upgrade them then the market stagnates. People who just brought one don't need a marginal speed boost, of course some do, but Apple expects those to upgrade on a 2-3 year basis.

I must have posted this about a dozen times already, but those who already own the 2018 iPad Pros are NOT the main target market for a 2019 iPad Pro release. You can even argue that the main target market is basically everyone else.

Anyhow, there is no guarantee the new iPad Pros would be announced at all. A semi-silent update is always possible, or else a mere mention in passing in September. Or else a separate event in October.

There will always be people that spent $$ to own something before the release of a new version. I spent almost $2k on my 12.9, keyboard and pencil. But that was on launch day which was alsmot a year ago? That's plenty long enough for a new product to replace the other.

With more RAM the optimised apps can do even more. They are optimised within the limits of the hardware available. They can still be optimised and use more RAM. The adobe software in this case will benefit hugely from this and 8 GB is certainly an enabling point for this software. I can think of CAD software and other high end softwares that can start to make use of the iPad at 8 GB.

There's so little going on in iOS that 8GB of RAM might give the lift off of 16GB of RAM on a Mac/PC

I think 6 GB is virtually guaranteed as minimum for the next iPad Pro, but it’s possible a top end model could get 8 GB.

Personally I always really disliked the Android linking of storage and RAM tiers, though I guess it does add value to paying for the higher levels of storage. I wonder if eventually, as iOS (sorry, iPad OS) continues to develop in capabilities if they will start offering RAM as a separate upgrade like with Macs? I guess it wouldn't work quite the same, you'd just have a couple of RAM options, likely in the middle storage tiers - i.e. you could have:

64/6GB - $999
256/6GB - $1,149
256/8GB - $1,249
512/6GB - $1,349
512/8GB - $1,449
1TB/8GB - $1,749

I guess it would actually be closer to what Microsoft does for their surface offerings. This would require them to start advertising RAM as a feature, at least on the Pro models, but they already do it with Macs, so not all that outlandish. That does add yet more SKUs into the mix, but Apple seem to be heavily into maximising the average selling price of their devices currently, being able to charge say, $100 more for a few $ of extra RAM could be very profitable. Maybe to counter more SKUs they could merge the 64 and 256GB models into a 128GB model, starting at ~$1,099?

I have a maxed 1TB 6GB 12.9 2018.

I’m only upgrading if the GPU is improved 35+%

The iPad is so fast and dependable as it is. We are all now waiting for software to catch up.

Although....

If you want to bring your 2018 iPad to its knees, install a game called Nimian Legends.

Crank the settings and enjoy the slideshow....

I would buy an upgraded Apple Keyboard Case with illuminated keys.
