False usage time

Have had my 3GS for about 3 weeks now and this problem has just developed in the last few days.

My iPhone appears to be 'in use' when it is locked. It seems that for every 2 minutes I have it on standby, it 'uses' a minute.

I have tried everything. Location services, bluetooth, wifi are all off, with screen brightness at about 30%. There is nothing going on with the iPod. No pages iopen in safari, nothing running at all, yet it still tells me I have been using my iPhone heavily when I haven't touched it. This is of course having an effect on my battery life.

I restored it today and the same problem occurs. It hasn't been caused by a recently downloaded app as I deleted them all and after checking to see if that was the problem, re-downloaded them.

It is very puzzling and I have run out of ideas what it could be. Has anybody else experienced this problem or have any ideas what it could be?

My iPhone showed that I was on the phone once for 2 hours and 20 minutes, yet my AT&T bill stated that it was 2 hours and 31 minutes.
 
I have had this exact same issue with my 3G last week and i do again this morning. Im getting fed up with this BS. Screw having to restore the phone every other day.

Im at work right now and dont have my charging cable and the battery is just over half full, and its been off the charger for 2 hours and probably in stand by for 1:45hr.. while the other 15min was me trying to figure out why is my usage time going up...

I dont understand whats going on with this phone, i cleared memory, i rebooted it. Ive never seen a phone yet where you have to cripple every single feature in order to use it. I just turned wifi off also.
 
well my phone is nearly dead after having it off the charger since about 7:30AM.. i barely used it sent about 15txt msgs.. Im doing a restore tonight if that dont work im calling apple.

And just on friday i took it off the charger at 7:30AM didnt charge it until Saturday at around 11pm, and i had just under half battery left with heavy use..

I dont understand whats going on with this and why it does this...

Thing is, even if push is on, it shouldn't have that effect on the battery. Take a look a BlackBerries, they do push e-mail constantly and their batteries can last for days. This includes the Storm.

Push is off.. Fetch is not.

This iphone is almost like turn everything off, put it in airplane mode and just admire it dont even think about using it if yo want the batt to last.

Anyways i restored it last night. Im gonna give it a try and see. Its better today and yesterday it nearly was dead when i got home because of the batt.

What are your fetch settings?
 
15minutes..

The other day the phone was at home entire day long so it actually was able to fetch every 15min where it had a wifi connection all day and the battery didnt do this.. infact it barely went down. Yesterday when it did this i didnt even have a wifi connection (Data is off from the provider).

Well, there's a good possibility for your battery issues right there. You didn't say anything about this in your OP. Change it to manual or hourly. Also, check your advanced settings under fetch.

Lmao where is my issue exactly? That my phone is set to fetch every 15minutse and that it doesnt have a wifi connection/ cellular data so it actually cant fetch? And yet the battery still drains itself?

While the other day it was at home, and it WAS able to fetch and YET it still didnt go nearly down as fast as yesterday.

Weird thing, exact same location as yesterday and the battery isnt doing what it did yesterday.. hmm i wonder what my issue is?

My 3G was set to check for e-mails every 15 minutes and it was fine on battery life, that can't be the issue. All it does is send a few kb to a mail server anyway, how's that gonna be responsible for the major power drainage?

That's where the problem is... cos u set it to fetch and it doesnt have any connection...

The iPhone is not smart enough to detect there is no internet connection and stop doin anything...

It will keep reconnecting and trying to establish the connection to fetch...

And you know this from where? Cause that is not true.

Okay, this has happend to me 3 times now, twice at work (yesterday and about a week ago). And then before that it happend to me at home, where i had wifi again. The phone was on standby for about 5hours.. and it drained itself while on standby?

So with your theory of it not knowing to fetch and not, how did it drain itself in 4.5hours? Since it had a connection and it didnt need to establish it constantly. Mind explaining that to me?

Take your phone back to Apple, it has a faulty battery.

I just restored it last night and set it up as new phone and im going to give it one more chance. If it fails im calling apple.

Whats weird is that yesterday it got down to about 20% battery, it took A VERY LONG time to charge back up.

While other times the battery might fall just short of 50% and it charges back up fast?

Is that something to worry about or what?

Again, your phone has a faulty battery, take it back to Apple.

Although you probably have a faulty battery, you state in the first post that you didn't have wifi, had fetch, and your battery drained. With wifi it did not. So, LYAO all you want, but your fetch is fetching and it can't get a signal. If you're getting 96 emails a day or more, then fetch is fine, otherwise you should be using push. Anyway, if you have it all figured out, then why are you posting? :)

So if i dont have wifi i should go into my settings adn turn fetch off and set it to push? Even if i dont have a push mail account? Cause what i use is gmail.

This makes no sense, so if no internet connection is present run to the settings and set the thing on fetch before it acts up? Lol.

Today the battery is reading full and ive send txts out and talked on the phone for close to an hour.

If you're getting a marginal cell signal, your battery is going to suffer, internet connection or not (although, I'd guess that trying to make an internet connection -- like fetch -- with a marginal signal would make things worse). The issue is that, with low bars, the phone seems to make contact with the cell towers more often, which helps to drain your battery (the phone needs to contact the cell towers so that the towers know where to route your incoming phone calls). You can hear this by placing your phone near something with a speaker: you should hear the periodic GSM "bzzt-bzzt-bzzt" buzz sound more often with lower bars. That's the sound of your battery draining.
