My 2011 Mac mini is long in the tooth. (Maxed out memory and has a 128gb SSD and 1tb hd.) My kids all use their iPads for school and I think that will serve our computing needs perfectly. HOWEVER I need a solution for storing our photos. I do have access to my 2017 iMac at work if need be.

What are my solutions for storing all of these pictures?

Thanks in advance!

(BTW I do have a TB of storage in iCloud but I don’t want that to be the only place I’m storing my pictures.)

1.
Ravpower file hub pro attached to any external portable drive.

2. WD My Passport Wireless Pro.

Do a quick search. Great solutions. If you can’t find the thread post here I’ll give you the link.

#2 is what I’m going with when I transition to iPad only after WWDC

I'll second the RAVPower FileHub but I would also consider a NAS which can be accessed via SMB from the iPad.

Any cloud based service is good if you’re mostly connected to Internet all the time. For manual offline storage you can have a WiFi enabled external hard drive.

Personally I use iCloud, google photos, amazon cloud and my personal home media hub made up of 4TB RAID drives.

Do you have any application needs that are not met in the iOS app store? Are any of your kids going to do any coding in the future? Do you like filling out your taxes on an iPad? Are you sure you are OK with having every single piece of your electronic history, not being under your own control?

I wish you luck.

I’m slowly but steadily moving toward a more efficient, affordable and (fingers crossed) simpler home setup, so threads like this educate and inspire me. Work stays at work and it’s all Windows and old tech kludge, so I want nothing but Apple Store elegance when I get home and I want it to all work “like magic.” :D

The words “iPad only” sound great, but in reality I’m going to be “iPhone/iPad/Apple Watch/Apple TV/HomePod, MBP, and Hue lighting only” for the foreseeable future and that doesn’t mention the “infrastructure” of wires, subscriptions, hubs, etc. to support such a “simple” lifestyle.

Kinda with you on that. I’m an author so “theoretically” I could go iPad only. But right now I’m in a deep edit of my new book. My thinkpad (yeah yeah awesome keyboard and I pretty much live in Office and a Browser so who cares? :)) is connected to a 24” monitor. Also have a 6 TB drive constantly saving my work.

I’ve got 3 Word documents, one spreadsheet, one note for on the go thoughts I’ve had while rewriting and then the new document on the thinkpad screen. Pretty much impossible to do that all with an iPad.

The reality is that the iPad will replace my mobile device. It’ll work for drafting in scrivener, first drafts, movie making looks easier on that and of course handwritten notes. But there’s NO WAY I can be iPad only. I’ll be shifting to a desktop (Mac mini if it’s ever updated or else a MbA in clamshell mode) for home office work and editing etc and the iPad for all my mobile computing needs.

Pretty sure someone will say I may as well get a laptop that does both but fact is that the iPad Pro does things a laptop can’t. Two devices, each serving a specific need.

If I was going to be on the road more than 6 months and knew I had this kind of editing to do an iPad simply wouldn’t be enough. Either carry a laptop or, iPad for one task and if I can find one a used 11” MBA for the others. (My 2011 MBa works but it’s getting sluggish)

I don’t have that kind of long travel coming up and Do have access to my home office so I’ll go with the iPad / desktop combination.

And frankly, while I have edited an entire novel on my old 11”, flipping through multiple spaces for different Word files it simply isn’t fun. At the end of the day I need a huge screen to compare files and the smaller screen of the laptop to write. No laptop I get will ever be really enough so F it. iPad Pro it is to replace my laptop and keep a desktop with huge screens external drives stereo etc at home.

If you have a mini you already have a screen, keyboard and mouse. Is just replace the mini with either the 399 deal at best buy for the 2014 version or a used MBA. Something basic just for backups etc. I mean stick it in a cupboard if you like and use your TV as a screen. That way you have all options covered. The WiFi drive I’m looking at is USD 200. For a couple of hundred bucks more you could update your mini. Maybe I’m old fashioned but I don’t think I can be without a “real” computer. My profession is ideal to be iPad only. I just write, right? But there’s so much more to it mainly having a huge screen to compare docs, an actual file system , multiple iterations of Word etc

Applications: All my apps are on the iPad. I've been iPad only at work and at home since the iPad 4.

Kids Coding: No. We do homeschool but the iPad meets all of our needs. My son will be going off to college next year to get his Pharm D and we already know we have to buy him a laptop then. (Unfortunately it's probably a PeeCee. He's not happy.)

Taxes: My is a CPA and does our taxes at work. All of her accounting software isn't available on the Mac anyway. Sooooo....

Control: I'm pretty comfortable with the control the iPad and iOS gives me especially since Files.

Look, I'm used to going against the norm here. I heard a lot of these arguments back in the 90's from PC users.

Most of the solutions already offered are more than sufficient. Drop Box, iCloud, Google Photos, Amazon. If you have a relatively modern Wifi router get an external HD and hook it up via USB, then you'll have something everyone can access.

If you’re comfortable with Files app or any file management app that interfaces with the specific storage solution you end up choosing then that’s all that matters.

There are those of us who for photo storage draw our perspective from having a heavy file management component that might not align with your own.

For me personally when I photograph events it’s not uncommon for me to come back with a few hundred photos or several hundred if it’s a sporting event. There’s no way I’d want to manage that kind of volume of photographs on a mobile device OS. Just the sorting through of files and bulk renaming would be a huge chore on something like an iPad through a mobile app compared to doing it on my Mac. Pulling files off of cards through lightning connector dongles and pushing them over WiFi isn’t my idea of fun - I’d much rather pull things off using a computer with a faster card reader and faster write speed to storage.

Precisely my use case - hundreds of RAW images (and some video) per day while traveling. I use a laptop and Lightroom - with a mouse - for on-the-road processing. My iPad Pro 10.5 goes along but I find the workflow far too inefficient on it for major photo processing & management. And I travel to a lot of places where there is no Internet access - or it is extremely poor - so I don't rely on the cloud at all.

I couldn’t. My wife hated doing taxes on an iPad, and used my laptop. I use iCloud for photos, it stuff download them to my computer, and back up my computer. Photos (especially wedding) are too important just to trust 1 storage.

I was going to convince my mom to go iPad only, until I remembered a lot of these things.

I love how people use Dropbox is a back up, because it’s not. I was foolish and tried this once and got burned.

75% of my family uses iOS 90% of our computing time.

My application needs are met with iOS.

My kid is coding with linux laptops and an android phone. The other kid's three year old MacBook Pro is used like an iPad Pro, so I don't see it being replaced.

My taxes were filed using iOS.

My electronic history is mostly on the cloud. What needs to be controlled and to what extent, maybe some pictures, music, books and vital documents?

For 10+ years our bi-weekly Linux installfests have been gradually changing from server builds and desktop/laptop installations to just a small attendance of laptops. The phones have replaced daily computing needs. With casting/HDMI and Bluetooth peripherals a considerable amount of computing may be accomplished. I've tried the no Google and no Apple approach to computing through open source phones and laptops. The open source strategy can be done, but why do so? We're tracked by camera and electronic activity in every way and every day. Sure we can tune the tracking to our own standard of acceptance.

Attach any size external to that Mac Mini. Store media on that external.

Extra backup: activate Time Machine backups if not already. Attach a SECOND external to that Mac Mini to be the Time Machine backup.

Extra, extra backup (offsite): alternate TWO time machine backup drives always leaving one at another location (work? bank safe deposit? family?). Swap them out regularly (monthly? bi-weekly? weekly?), let Time Machine freshen up the backup and keep the rotation going. As long as you are swapping them regularly, your risk will be capped at anything since that last backup drive swap that wouldn't survive some Mac Mini + TM backup drive destruction/loss (not still stored on mobile devices perhaps outside the home in the event).

Along with this, use any of the cloud solutions too but the above will allow you to completely control your media and wouldn't cost that much given how cheap hard drives have become.

I pay $9.99/mo for 2TB of iCloud storage which is shared among everyone in my family and never worry or think about it again. For my own Lightroom catalog on the Mac I use a Samsung T5 2TB SSD, but that won’t work with iOS.
