Do you have any application needs that are not met in the iOS app store? Are any of your kids going to do any coding in the future? Do you like filling out your taxes on an iPad? Are you sure you are OK with having every single piece of your electronic history, not being under your own control?
I wish you luck.
Kinda with you on that. I’m an author so “theoretically” I could go iPad only. But right now I’m in a deep edit of my new book. My thinkpad (yeah yeah awesome keyboard and I pretty much live in Office and a Browser so who cares?

) is connected to a 24” monitor. Also have a 6 TB drive constantly saving my work.
I’ve got 3 Word documents, one spreadsheet, one note for on the go thoughts I’ve had while rewriting and then the new document on the thinkpad screen. Pretty much impossible to do that all with an iPad.
The reality is that the iPad will replace my mobile device. It’ll work for drafting in scrivener, first drafts, movie making looks easier on that and of course handwritten notes. But there’s NO WAY I can be iPad only. I’ll be shifting to a desktop (Mac mini if it’s ever updated or else a MbA in clamshell mode) for home office work and editing etc and the iPad for all my mobile computing needs.
Pretty sure someone will say I may as well get a laptop that does both but fact is that the iPad Pro does things a laptop can’t. Two devices, each serving a specific need.
If I was going to be on the road more than 6 months and knew I had this kind of editing to do an iPad simply wouldn’t be enough. Either carry a laptop or, iPad for one task and if I can find one a used 11” MBA for the others. (My 2011 MBa works but it’s getting sluggish)
I don’t have that kind of long travel coming up and Do have access to my home office so I’ll go with the iPad / desktop combination.
And frankly, while I have edited an entire novel on my old 11”, flipping through multiple spaces for different Word files it simply isn’t fun. At the end of the day I need a huge screen to compare files and the smaller screen of the laptop to write. No laptop I get will ever be really enough so F it. iPad Pro it is to replace my laptop and keep a desktop with huge screens external drives stereo etc at home.

My 2011 Mac mini is long in the tooth. (Maxed out memory and has a 128gb SSD and 1tb hd.) My kids all use their iPads for school and I think that will serve our computing needs perfectly. HOWEVER I need a solution for storing our photos. I do have access to my 2017 iMac at work if need be.
What are my solutions for storing all of these pictures?
Thanks in advance!
(BTW I do have a TB of storage in iCloud but I don’t want that to be the only place I’m storing my pictures.)
If you have a mini you already have a screen, keyboard and mouse. Is just replace the mini with either the 399 deal at best buy for the 2014 version or a used MBA. Something basic just for backups etc. I mean stick it in a cupboard if you like and use your TV as a screen. That way you have all options covered. The WiFi drive I’m looking at is USD 200. For a couple of hundred bucks more you could update your mini. Maybe I’m old fashioned but I don’t think I can be without a “real” computer. My profession is ideal to be iPad only. I just write, right? But there’s so much more to it mainly having a huge screen to compare docs, an actual file system , multiple iterations of Word etc
