I’m sorry if this has been asked before - I searched and couldn’t find anything, although it seems like it would be a common question?

My brother and I are considering splitting an Apple One Premier subscription with family sharing, with my account as the organiser. We both already subscribe to Apple Music individually. If I invite him to family sharing is there any risk that he will lose any items in his library? Has anybody done this before and can confirm it went smoothly?

This support article from Apple says “if someone in the family group already has an individual or student subscription to Apple Music, renewal of that subscription is automatically cancelled when they join the family group” but it’s not clear whether that means my brother’s library would be affected.

Thanks.

Apple Family Sharing is basically Apple ID(s) given accesses to something paid by another Apple ID, in your case that something is Apple Music. So if your brother given an access to Apple Music through your family sharing, and he's an existing Apple Music user who's already having his own library on there, logic would say that he will be able to access his own library without anything missing provide that the Apple ID you invite him to join is the same ID he use subscribed to his Apple Music.

I never have direct experience with this since my wife was a new Apple Music user (has no library of her own) but I can't see why not. I can't see why Apple would block his library just because it's paid by you and not him.

The best way to go about it is following that Apple support you quoted by inviting him to join and let his own subscription be automatically cancelled and as a result it will be paid for by you instead.

I don't think so.. I've subscribed, cancelled then re-subscribed to AM in the past and it's kept my library from previous
