The Ipad is a first gen device. It is bound to evolve. It does what it does. But that seems to be dynamic.

I have a family. Each of us have their own Laptop. (all PC)
We also have a Mac desk top.

OK so why do we need an Ipad? The point is that we dont NEED it. We want it.
Why?
The way we see it the ipad may make a good anchor with all Family and HOME oriented schedule and communications flowing to the iPad.

For the family I bought the MINIMUM 3G unit. Why? because this is not going to be used to store our music and video collections. We have other devices for that. So light media = less need for space. (in theory)
There are PLENTY of cloud based storage solutions which are less expensive (in the short haul) than the 64 gig 3G iPad.

For us the iPad is an experiment. Can a family Share such a thing? Can we ENJOY it. How will it end up being used?
Is there room for it in our computing worlds? My fear is that we will all find it so useful that we all HAVE to have one.

Oh you might ask why we bought a 3G unit.
I am pretty sure that when on the road the iPad will find a home keeping the KID happy. The idea that we will have access to email and information on the road WITHOUT wifi sounds GREAT.
We will see.
Anybody here have a similar plan? is it working?

Umm ok.
The iPad is nothing more than a consumption device in my eyes. It's my favorite couch accessory.

The problem is that there are no user profiles.

I don't want to share my iPad with my sister or mother for the fear that they could just open my mail anytime they want. Why would Jobs present this as a family device and not have profile for each member of the family? It just doesn't make sense, fast user switch would be awesome on the iPad.

Are you saying that as long as the family is on the couch it is a good idea?
Has the iPad become more important than the TV/Receiver Remote control?
I can't see that happening in my house where HDTV/satellite receiver is ON and is important.
