fan always running on full

Hey guys,

I'm having a problem that I can't fix.... my iMacs CPU fan, no matter the temp or usage is always running at 3900-4200 ... and it won't shut up... I can leave my computer idle, come back, see that the CPU is ~30°C ... but the fan is still wurring away.

It is really loud, and really annoying. I've tried unplugging the computer for 30 seconds and restarting, I've reset the PMU... I'm not sure what to do next.


All the programs I've found raise the default speed of the fan, but I can't seem to find any that will lower it, or at least change the threshold like you can for a MBP.


any tips?

nope, don't want to give my computer up for a week so they can "troubleshoot".

I guess it's something that you'll have to deal with for now. Resetting the SMC and PMU should have solved the increased minimum fan speed for the majority of cases.

u have checked your temps with istat pro or something just to be safe??

I had a problem previously with the mac pro noise issue. But mine had to do with the ati card's fan constantly on full blast.

Try running the hardware test to see if there is a problem.

Check activity monitor.

Not much else I can suggest. I know what you mean about leaving it with them to troubleshoot for a week. Unless you pay $99 to get pro care and they'll have to troubleshoot it in a day.

For me what i did was troubleshoot on the phone, and then got them to send me the replacement part (ati card) to fix myself. Maybe you can do it if it's a user replaceable part.
