so i had taken my macbook pro to the applestore genius bar a week ago, because of a noise i had noticed coming from my right fan. It was a squeaking, ticking noise, more prominent when the fan sped up and was running hotter.

the genius at the store ran a 45 minute diagnostic, put his ear up to the area where the fan is, and was like " well, i dont see anything in the diagnostic, and i dont hear anything, so, i dunno, sorry."

obviously, i knew something was wrong....

soooo, fast forward 6 days ....

running the computer pretty hard, doing video and audio recording, and the fan sped up, started making the noises, alot louder this time, and suddenly *SQUEAL, CLICK, CLACK, WHIRRRRRRRRR* then silence.

hmm....nothing was wrong huh?

so i brought it back, same guy, ran diagnostic...diagnostic told him "right fan running slower than required speed" failed diagnostic.

now they are replacing both fans at no charge tomorrow or wed. depending on when the parts come in.

so. yeah, just wanted to share my experience.

i own a Macbook Pro 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo, 1.5gb RAM(added on 1gb)
Purchased this in July 2006.

thanks for reading.

I believe this is a problem with this model - mine is the same and purchased the same month. I have had one logic board replacement, and later a right hand fan replacement, to deal with fan failure and then later noise.

Your experience reflects my first failure.

Hopefully what they have done has fixed the problem but I would consider running some intensive programs (Game demos?) to see how your machine handles a few hours of intense processor pressure with the new fans.

They seem to have got it licked now. I had a 2.16 for six months and passed it on to a friend which is trouble free. My C2D is a couple of months old and is well.
