Hi,

I just bought a new Power Mac G5 and after three weeks had to have it exchanged for a new one because the fan suddenly started running constantly and was extremely loud. The Mac store determined that it needed a new logic board.

Anyway while I am waiting for the new machine to arrive I have been using my old G4 and am noticing that the fan seems to be running on it as well. I don't remember it doing that before, although I used to have it on the floor and may not have noticed. It is nowhere near as noisy as the G5 was and does not do it while it is sleeping. I am sort of worried that there maybe a problem with the outlet I have been plugging them into. All I have is a surge protector strip, is that enough?

I would greatly appreciate any insight anyone has on this?

Thanks

Often if a powerbar has been compromised by a power surge once it will not protect a second time. That being said I can't think why that would affect the fan in you mac going on/off.
You elude to the powermac not being in the same location as you had it prevuously. Is it possible that air isn't circulating arounnd it in it's new location?

What generation Powermac G4?

MY quicksilver's fan is never off, whenever it is plugged in and powered on (not in sleep mode) the fan is running. The same is said for the older Graphite G4s and the B&W G3s.

Why did you stop using your G4 when you got your G5? I use my G4 and G3 Powermacs as servers, and workstations in other rooms now.

I am not sure of the generation, it is about 4 years old and is blue and grey.

Thanks

I just switched my office into the basement that is why I was unsure about the wiring situation in the outlet but I think the air is circulating around it just fine.

Do you feel that a power strip is ample protection or do you think I should invest in one of those battery back up units?

Thanks

Your fan will run all the time. I have never had a MDD (Mirrored Drive Door) model (the last of the G4 Powermacs) but I believe that they would have the same behavior. They are also called wind Tunnel macs, so I believe that they are considerably louder then the older models, but again I am not sure personally.

My old G4 400mhz was fairly noisy but no too loud to handle, and yes the fan would spin all the time regardless of whether or not it was sleeping...

Quick question--> How do B&W G3's compare to the Powermac G4's for noise as i am looking into picking one up but i dont want a roaring slug,

b&w g3's and early g4's had quantum fireball HD's which are very very noisy.

and easy to replace with larger, faster, quieter drives.

My B&W has the stock 9gig and a Seagate 160gb drive. They are both actually quite quiet.

The loudest part of my B&W was cpu fan for the G4 upgrade, thankfully i found out later that it didn't need it in the first place!

Most G4s I've used run their fans constantly, so I don't think you are having issues.

My dual 533 ran it's fan consantly, and that didn't change when I swapped the CPUs out for a single 1.4GHz.

That is the exact one that I own, Zip drive and all. My fan runs constantly, have always had it on the desktop. Doesn't bother me at all. I think that it's the best looking of all the G4 models.

Yeah, my G4 is a graphite model too. It lives on the floor though. It's funny how the case sometimes looks grey, sometimes blue. Personally I think the G4 towers are the best looking dektops Apple ever made, with the possible exception of the TAM.

I am a quicksilver guy myself (and have one), I guess we all like what we have. I really want to get an AGP Graphite G4 to add to the collection, and get an other mac Folding again!

Yes, just a matter of the amount of light. TAM?
