My hard drive fan idles at 1600 with nothing else going on, the gpu or processor (not sure which one, I'm not home) fan also runs like 1500, is this normal?

Mines currently running at 1100 but the speeds your talking about arnt all that fast i wouldnt worry about it.
i guess they are alright the i5 runs hotter then the core2 duo so the fan speeds will be a bit higher too , but pure fan speeds say absolute nothing if noted without the temperatures

if your fans would run at 1600 rpm with a harddrive temp of around 50 celsius or if they would run at 1600 at a harddrive temp of 70celsius or above

Follow these instructions and check again.
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
4. Release the power button.
5. Attach the computers power cable.
6. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
