hi,
i have a MBP 15" c2d 160Gb 2GB ram. my fans usually are always about2000 rpms and the CPU temp is about 135 f. i never noticed the fans going into the 4000 rpm area, but just recently for about a minute, the fans went up to that speed and i wasnt doing any thing other than viewing, i guess what you would call a heavlly modded myspace page....i think other than that i might have had itunes, and ichat on with a cam chat?

do you think this is normal? im just slightly concerned cause i never heard the fans that loud and have had this since march

nah thats fine.. your fans can go upto 6000 and can sustain that for at least a coupla hours.

some users here have their fans set to 4000 constantly to keep it nice and cool, their fans might suffer some damange quicker than others but some other components would last a bit longer.

4000 for 1minute or 2 is fine, wouldnt do any damage at all

Your MBP will be doing another system process while you are using your computer - that's why the fans sped up.

I'd be careful with your wording - you are making it sound like that if someones fans run at full blast constantly (i.e. game playing) then they are going to suffer from fan problems later on. Not true.

In theory, the fans would wear out quicker if running at higher RPM, but none of us can actually say for sure how long a fan would last running at max rpm. I wouldn't personally worry about it. Just let the system do its thing without intervention. Unless of course you like to use your computer on your lap and it gets too warm for comfort. Then you could experiment with smcfancontrol and determine at which lowest RPM allows for a comfortable temperature on your lap.

lol what part are u going at.. most of it is unclear!!! still it seems to all make sense to me. i can write it in long hand for those of us hu cant read shorthand if u wish.....
