After I installed the 10.6.8 update on my MBA 13" with 4GB of RAM, after booting up, the fans are spinning quite fast. On 10.6.7 wasn't the case. Tried a reboot, re-start etc... and still the same thing. It takes a while (like 3-5 mins) for the fans to go back to normal.

Has anyone else noticed the same thing on their machines?

Your fans are always on when your Mac is on, spinning at a minimum of 2000 rpm (for MBPs) or 1800 rpm (for MBAs). They will spin faster as needed to keep temps at a safe level. If they're spinning up without increased heat, try resetting the SMC. Also, make sure you don't block the vents, which are located at the rear, near the hinge.

No problems here after the update.

Have you tried using the Activity Monitor program and seeing if a process is using a lot of CPU usage? That'll cause the fan to come on.

Hm... I think I might know what you are talking about.
After updating to 10.6.8 at the time my MBA was going to shut off the fans sped up to approx. ~5500 RPM. (I know the difference between a 2000 RPM and a 5500 RPM sound)
But after the reboot, the computer came back to 2000 and has been like that for the past 12 hours.

You don't have to depend on sound. iStat Pro will give you accurate readings of your fan speed and temps, among other things.

I already have iStat Pro, but mind you. When the computer is updating, and encrypting files at the shutting down mode, you cannot see and istat pro widget, but only the bar that is loading up.

Gotcha. Again, if fans spin up without increased heat, try resetting the SMC.

I have iStats installed, will see how fast the fans go up to... Tried the activity monitor and the only thing that's actually using like 2% is Dropbox...

Will continue monitoring...

Remember when using Activity Monitor to change "My Processes" at the top to "All Processes".

Are you running Parallels? If so it's causing it. I had the same thing happen on my MBP, there is a thread in the MBP section called dock using 100 percent of the CPU. Post number 7 shows the fix. If you don't see it i will post a link for you.

I had this issue on mine, where my MBA was running fine, then I closed my MBA only to come back about 3 hours later to find it heated up with the fans running at full speed. I had to turn it off, it wouldn't come out of sleep mode at all. I know Parallels was running at the time, but I think I have the option to add icons to the dock turned off.
