Fans speed weird

On my mac pro i have been noticing for a while that when i scroll down or up on a page in safari and it seems to be limited to safari, you can hear the fans speed up noticeably. Why is this? I do not have SMC installed but even when i do the fans still do the same thing.

iStat saya that my Power Supply fan is at 700 and same with my exhaust fan
But the CPU and Hard drive fans always say 0.

Should i do a reinstall?

What is going on.

It is very odd.

The noise is still there when in safari after a reset.

I had an odd fan situation which I realized was CAUSED by iStat. Somehow two of my fans were running at 2000 RPM constantly. To fix it, I showed the "Fan speed control" in the iStat Menus control panel (Sensors section) and then changed the speed control to "Default" -- now my fans are correctly adjusting up and down based on load. (I don't think they are ever at 0, though.)

I hadn't ever changed the fan speed control, at least not on purpose, and yet that was definitely the problem for me.

Does it happen in any other browser?

If only Safari, I would disable any extensions you've added (if any) and reset the browser.

I would also make sure Flash is up to date and consider installing Click-to-Flash.

I know you may think you never installed fancontrol but if you ever migrated from another osx you may have it . look for those files and lets us know if you find them.


My mac pro was partial fancontrol and partial iStat. Until I looked the link above and deleted the above files. now I am fully under iStat and have 5 different fan speeds programed in. I have the fans set at 2 the second slowest speed.

I looked for those file extension and i could not find any of them. I did delete SMC fan control and will only use iStat from now on. I played more with my pro and i did find it does do it with other programs. Seem mainly like i have to be scrolling through something lengthy. Like mail or safari.

I will try booting off another partition of OSX and see if it still does it. If i does it rules it down to hard ware and not software.

Well i finally pulled the computer apart last night and determined what fan and component was making the noise.

It is the graphics card. I will be having to get a new one sooner or later, The fan is going crazy in there.
