Fast DVD burning question

I tried to burn a MP4 file to dvd tonight and it took 4+ hours, yikes! Is there a faster and simpler way to copy dvds? And yes, it was my own personal DVD.
What I used:
Handbrake to rip the DVD to mp4 format.
Then Toast 10 to burn. I've also done it with iDVD which was painfully slower!

Is this a bad combination and does anyone know better software to use?

Do you simply want to copy the video DVD, thus having another copy of a video DVD as video DVD to be playable by a video DVD player?

If so, then the HandBrake + Toast route is not necessary, as HandBrake transcodes the MPEG-2 video to MPEG-4 video (changes the codec and introduces image quality loss, even if not easily perceivable) and Toast again transcodes the MPEG-4 video to an MPEG-2 video (again introducing image quality loss), which is highly CPU intensive and takes time.

If it is your own personal video DVD, which has no copy protection scheme on it, you can use Disk Utility to copy a CD or DVD.

Thanks for the timely and informative answer. Will this method work for commercial DVD movies that I've purchased and want a backup copy? I'm simply trying to make fast copies of DVDs instead of taking hours.
