any good recommendations on a b&w 1200dpi laser printer that is network ready, handles at least 11 x 17 paper or larger, and is pretty fast at processing and printing large files?

I am trying to replace a gcc elite xl 20/1200 that is just too slow.

Do you need 11x17 with a small margin or a print area of at least 11x17?

Quite a few of the big business printers and the Xerox Copiers should be fast enough for you.

Though in a business setting one of the digital Xerox B&W Copiers would be awsome.

However HP does have some printers that eat into the Xerox territory, and are decently fast also.

The current version of the old 5Si -- the HP 8150 should be able to chew through 10k-150k pages a month. But it and the models above only emulate 1200dpi at up to 50ppm.

Need to go to their smaller printers to get true 1200dpi, with the newer print engines.

a HP 5000 series for a bit less than the big two printers... Still like the Xerox Copiers though.

Ideally larger than 11 x 17 print area, like something that can print an 11 x 17 proof with printers marks. Aside form the 5000 series are there other machines that do that?

I dunno about B&W printing but we have a Xerox 6350 DP and it is fast. We often try to race after sending a printjob to see if we can beat the printer. Usually we lose. I would assume the B&W Xerox printers have similar speeds if not faster.

From HP, probably not...

While the 5000 series "may" be a true 1200dpi printer.

The 8000s and the 9000s while they can handle volume, can barely handle a 11x17 print area (so no crop marks), and only are 600dpi printers emulating 1200dpi.

Which leaves HP with the 5200 and maybe the 5100, though I don't know what their true print area is even though the handle 12x18 paper in 1 tray.

An 11x17 proof printer narrows the market down to the desktop publishing printers and I have no idea what is on the market now.
