Hi there,

currently I use a Mac Mini G4 & a PowerBook G4 (both on Tiger, maxed out and SSD upgraded) for music production purpose (special old stuff that sounds interesting). Both machines can be remote controlled with Apple Screen Sharing from my M2 MacStudio but the performance really is underwhelming and gets even worse, when classic mode is involved. The PowerBook is the last and fastest of the line and I think that the bottleneck lies in the used protocoll and not the hardware itself. I also used some VNC clients but the performance is even worse. Since everything is PowerPC based it is tricky to find something that would work in the old and new world so my hope is, that anyone has some ideas? Thanks!

You could try ARD( Apple Remote Desktop ), it's not free, they still have it on the app store, but you may need to check client compatibility with Tiger.

Also try a wired connection to your router.

Those are really the only two ways to speed things up other than dropping the screen resolution and bit depth of the client.

Thanks for all your answers!

I tried Apple Remote Desktop and was able to install it but I have no clue yet in how to configure it and which app I can use to connect.

Then I tried every single VNC solution and some are a faster and some are a slower. The fastest is indeed JollysFastVNC and that could be doable (not 100% perfect though).

The fastes solution (so far) however is Timbuktu. Since there is no working version for Apple Silicon (not even rosetta) I obtained a Windows version and can RDP from my M2 Studio to a Windows machine and from there to the Mac mini G4 running OS9 and that insane way is even faster than the fastest VNC connection. I then tried to get it running on macOS with Crossover and can install it but can't finalize the connection to the host and prints an error message.

I'll fiddle around more tomorrow and keep this threat updated. Thanks again for any hints and ideas!

I've used Chicken of the VNC. It's probably not the fastest. I should compare with JollysFastVNC.

Ok I finally found the perfect solution and that is not using Crossover but Wine to run Timbuktu Pro 9.06 on my M2. With that I can remote control either the Mac mini G4 running OS9 or the PowerBook G4 running Tiger almost in real time. So, if someone ever face the same issue: search for Timbuktu Pro on Macintoshgarden, grab Wine (don't bother trying Crossover) and you got a stable and fast way to use headless PowerPC (and beyond!) Macs.
