Hi all, just wanting to gauge opinion really. I have an iMac which is pristine and only just over 3 months old. I have AppleCare and so I took it into the Apple Store a couple of days back and here are the faults.

  • Weird black smudge noticeable on lighter colours. It's behind the glass and seems really deep into the LCD.
  • FireWire transfer is sometimes really slow. Painfully slow!
  • Spinning beach ball when logging in. Intermittent and can sometimes go a week without it occurring. Mac needs to be turned off. Nothing obvious in console.
  • Sometimes takes ages to respond to the option key on boot. Meaning it takes a while to list the bootable devices/volumes. At the Apple store, it wouldnt even show their boot FireWire device!
  • The iMac has fired it's fans on all cylinders a couple of times
  • I use a cloned image of the iMac (which I took after setting it up 3 months ago. The mini that it runs on has none of the issues the iMac has. I use the same software on mini and iMac, as well as a MBP I have. I even use the same software on my work iMac and none of these machines apart from the new iMac has any issues.

The apple store have offered to replace the LCD and possibly the HD but aside from the boot issue I had in the store with their FireWire drive, they have not been able to replicate any other issue. They also offered to erase/install but I have already done this 3 times!

Just wondering what others think and if they've had any similar issues?

Ta!

Just ask for a replacement if problems continue to occur after the first fixing attempt; you're still under warranty anyway.

Yeah I thought that'd be a possibility. It's just I'm not that confident that swapping the HD will resolve the issues I'm having. Obviously swapping out the LCD will resolve the other issue but I've never known a HD to cause the other problems... So I'm thinking if I get it back with a new HD I will only end up back at the store in a few weeks. I cannot be certain I suppose but that is what I'm thinking.
