Hey people, just starting out here so any help appreciated.

Basically I had a 'Crisis' with my Powerbook G4 prior to travelling to a client for a big job about 10 days ago. My screen on the G4 just died (Backlight after being dropped....oops) and I had to make a quick decision.

I managed to confirm that I could get target Disk mode working so I decided to go to PC World (UK) and just buy a Macbook Pro and get back up fast. Unfortunately the chain haven't had the C2D stocks yet, so I ended up with a C1D 2.16GHz 1GB RAM 256MB VRAM 100GB HDD.

No problem at all getting transferred, meeting went well all documents were there and it was as if nothing had happened................apart from the whine. Apparently it's this bad boy to blame: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303365

Turns out the MBP had been in stock for ages and was an early one. I spoke to Applecare and they said as it was less than 14 days old, take it back and get a replacement and if the retailer wouldn't, Apple would.

I tried this and PC World basically said they could refund but not exchange as they had no stock of either they C1D or C2D. If they ordered me one it would take at least a week longer than getting it direct. So I got back on the phone to Apple. They said call back Monday as they had to update the purchase date first (as it had been in stock for so long, it was beyond the normal sale time frames apparently) and they would start the ball rolling.

Now to the question: What will I get? A C1D or a C2D? Do Apple have stocks of the C1D's or are they all ex factory these days?

TBH The C1D is perfectly adequate so long as it has the 256MB Video card so that would really be my only over-riding concern.

What do you folks think?

Gareth.

Get your refund then find a store that has the C2D. You may as well get the lastest. If there isn't a local retailer with one then order it online. I can't see one not being able to find one. Then again, I have no idea where you live.
best, tommy

If Apple are exchanging it for you, I would not be surprised if you got the Core 2 Duo model.

The only thing I find lacking about the Core Duo model is the missing FireWire800, which I would really have liked.
