I originally started off using plain old text edit but then I tried out text mate and it's much better. Now that my trial ran out I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions for a text editor.

there's nothing better than good ol' VIM...
and it's included with macs :)
tho.. it has a steep learning curve

I only use vi when I'm forced to.

I don't like Emacs. I like XEmacs

If you're looking for something with syntax highlighting, Smultron is a decent free options (although you'll want some replacement toolbar icons).

However, there is little to nothing that's free that also duplicates the TextMate functionality. I'd highly recommend buying TM, it's an app that's well worth the cost.

As has been mentioned by some others, TextWrangler isn't a bad option either (although, I personally don't care for it).

Oh, and vi FTW!

You haven't told us what you edit…

C++, java, (X)HTML, php, asp?

Recommendations may change based on that. Also my advice would be to pay for TextMate if text editing is something you do regularly.
