I need to be able to send faxes about 6 times a year. Not enough for a subscription service. I know wise net (I think) has a pay by the page service and I had to use it today. But looking up on amazon I saw a paperless fax machine - looks like a router but a "Fax server". Has anyone used one? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I fax occasionally and use SimpleFax. It's easy and works well.

With my extremely low use of faxing I've always been able to work within the constraints of online fax services (I've used gotfreefax.com and faxzero.com) for sending and the free receiving feature of eFax. I've had my eFax account and number for many years and can go years without using it…and the number is still valid.

Over the years, I rarely fax, but use iFax. Works flawlessly for me, from iPhone or my Mac. Highly recommend.

I recently wrote a server app for a bank: it takes data from files (that came from a db, obviously... probably by a cobol program) and send it via fax to various other banks.
I learned that the "fax" is actually emailed to some unlucky guys who have to manually check the data against their own db, then they send faxes back with the corrections, which are then emailed to somebody else who has to manually insert the corrections into the original db.
I was like, "wait, what?"

The US Patent & Trademark Office‘s approach is similarly comical. In order to be able to send things by email, I first have to file a form (tho some employees ignore this requirement). No such requirement needed for faxes.

So I email a pdf using my fax service, which sends it by fax to the PTO, which then sends an email of the image to the employee.

HelloFax is a web app, not a Mac app, but it would do what you want for free.
