I am looking for a free utility that will allow me to "fax" (send and receive) image and text files from my iMac. I would appreciate any suggestions. I am not interested in using online services for this.

You put "fax" in quotes. Not sure why.
There isn't much, if any, difference between using an internet-enabled fax application on your Mac or a service that is web-based. To fax bypassing the internet, you'd need to connect your Mac to a phone line somehow.
