FCC Approval Process

A few of us tried asking this in another thread and it didn't work out so i'm copying the original question*..

"Can Apple even start production on these things until after FCC Approval? Would we know if they have already received FCC Approval? Is 4 weeks long enough after FCC Approval for them to crank out enough units to actually have them available or in store in late March?"

So can anyone answer this and give more insight?

Yes they can make iPads without FCC approval. They just can't offer them for sale. Nobody knows how many iPads they can produce in 4 weeks.

Well, I thought the same thing, but what if the FCC does not approve it from some hardware reason?

Yes Apple does testing before FCC testing. FYI FCC doesn't actually DO the testing they have certified labs that Apple submits the product to for testing. I am sure they are highly confident it will pass approval.
 
1) The FCC has privacy options. If Apple doesn't want people to see their FCC app the FCC will honor that. As such, all of these "well, it has to go through the FCC first" comments are 100% useless.

2) There is relatively little chance the FCC will not approve the iPad. Apple has been doing that dance for a very long time, they know what they are doing.

That is what is called a business risk. If for any reason the FCC does not approve the design then all of the units thus far built have to be reworked. And as stated above they cannot even be offered for sale (or even advertised for sale) until they get FCC approval. Tandy (Radio Shack) got in some pretty hot water with the FCC way back in the early days of pc clones by putting a computer (the Tandy 2000 if I remember) in their catalog before it was approved, even though it said that it would not be available until a certain date.

I just hope they approve it soon and Apple starts pre-orders... I don't mind my money earning the $0.05 in interest but I would rather know I have my iPad secured.

I don't think you even need to preorder. I don't think people are going to be clamoring for a giant iPod touch when a giant iPod touch +3G +GPS is 2 months away. :)

Really... I think people are going to be surprised... Everyday I come up with more reasons and ways I would use my iPad... When ever I download an app im like "I can't wait to see how this works and looks on the iPad"!

That is not quite correct. They can offer it for sale as long as no one actually gets one until it has FCC approval.

I imagine the reason Apple is not taking pre-orders has more to do with a limit on how long you can go between pre-authorizing a transaction on you CC and actually charging your CC. I think it's 30 days.

At least one survey has shown that as many people plan on buying the lowest end iPad as are planning to buy the highest end (64GB+3G) model.

That makes sense... So based on that we could see pre-orders between now and March second and still make it the end of march!
