FCE on external drive

I'm out of room on my HD and want to put Final Cut Express back on my computer.... but its a hefty program...do you think it could run on an external drive using FW 800 plus store content on the same drive?

My friend runs FCP and store content on a FW400 HD and it works great.

If all you want is FCE then that is fine, you will have to do a customized install. But if you wanted livetype then it would require it to be on the System Drive. There is a section in the FCE manual that explains it better than I can
