How about this for weirdness...

Last week I bought a GTX 470 for my Mac Pro 3,1 running 10.8.2. with the latest nVidia drivers. Everything seemed stable until today.

Today, I was editing in Final Cut Pro X 10.0.4., I also had a Flash UStream video from twit.tv running in Safari. The result was a beachball that required a hard reset of the Mac Pro. Is this a truly an affect of the new GTX 470? I have no idea but I never noticed it to happen before.

It doesn't happen while watching Flash YouTube videos nor does this happen while watching the same Flash UStream twit.tv video in Firefox with FCP X is open.

I hope my explanation is clear. Really strange.

I have been testing out 10.8.2 on my second boot drive and I had a similar experience as you, but I was working in Cinema 4D and had safari in the back ground which crashed and forced me to do a hard restart twice within a week. I think there was a bug with Safari and there is a supplemental update to 10.8.2 that is supposed to address the safari issue.

I'm back working in 10.6.8 and have not had a chance to try the update yet unfortunately.

Beginning to think you are right about Safari. Just crashed again, this time with a Hulu video playing while FCP X open. I installed the Supplemental Update back when it first came out though.

LOL I was thinking safari too. Before you toss the card, I would try firefox or chrome.

Guess what, guys...It wasn't Safari. I was just testing again but this time with Firefox. I had Firefox playing a Hulu video while I was in Final Cut Pro X editing. Screen froze and required a hard restart. This didn't happen when I was playing the UStream earlier with FF. Now, I back to wonder if it is Flash, FCPX, the GTX 470, or some combination.

My guess would be Mt Lion. Does your card work in 10.6.8 ? If so, I'd give that a try to further rule out the video card.

OK, well, I have a headache now. I tested some more and FCP X crashed again, this time with no videos playing. So, I think it is the card and FCP X not playing well together. Not sure though.

So, I've left the GTX 470 in slot 1 and put my old ATI 2600 in slot 2. Monitor is plugged into the 2600. No crashes so far. Davinci Resolve seems to be fine with this and so is FCP X.

What I find curious is that FCP X and Motion didn't pop up the dialog box asking for an OpenCL card even though I'm running the monitor out of the 2600 (which isn't OpenCL compatible). So, apparently FCP X and Motion are detecting the GTX 470 for OpenCL but I'm not sure if they are using it for rendering.

I think I may have found a solution. I deleted the Final Cut plist files and restarted FCP X. No crashes in the last day or so. Fingers crossed.

Similar issues with a GTX 570 and FCProX under 10.8.2 with updated Nvidia

Thanks for letting me know this, Shawn. I was considering getting a GTX 570 sometime in the future to see if the crashes would stop. Now, that I know you are having similar issues under the 570, I can save myself the frustration.

Well, as it stands I still get hangs when using the 470 with FCP X. As a result, in an effort to minimize hangs, I close everything while I'm editing in FCP X while plugged into the GTX 470.

On the bright side FCP X 10.0.6. is faster than earlier versions.

Also, for anyone who would like to see console logs, here are some.

...Flash...

I've seen the Flash player do some really horrible things to my system, including leak memory etc. Given that it's the number one cause of crashes in Safari, one might conclude that you're seeing an interaction between Flash and FCP or something. Given how demanding FCP can be on the graphics system, and given how unstable Flash can be at times, my suggestion would be to just stop trying to use both at the same time and see if that helps.

Yeah, that's what I have been doing lately to see if the problems will go away. Time will tell.

And if this ends up being a driver bug, best we can do is wait and hope it gets fixed eventually. One would imagine that if Flash + FCP X is causing issues this severe, Apple and NVIDIA would be seeing them on the official Kepler products and thus will hopefully be able to fix them.

I'm curious if the official nVidia driver is causing it. I'm wondering if I would see a difference if I was only running the stock driver that is on OS X. I guess I'll test that once 10.8.3 comes out.
