I'm basically a newbie with FCPX although I've been working with it for awhile. I had a 5 minute video mostly edited. I believe I decided to go Option>N and then give the event a name, it had been just a date. When I renamed it the timeline disappeared and it seems to want me to add clips fropm the libarry for a new event. How do I get the original event back? Luckily I had saved an .fcpbundle as a backup a few days ago, is that a way to retrieve the timeline? Thanks

I have found the backup directory, opening the latest good date allowed the timeline to be recovered. I'm not going to remane anything until I get a better understanding of things. Despite having a lot of computer experience I am still boggled by the differences between the library, project, timeline and exactly where these items are stored.

Option+N doesn't rename your Event, it makes a new Event.
In the browser you likely had your date-named event still there with the project and clips inside it.

A library is a collection. It'll contain your events. Your events contain your projects which are the things that hold your timelines. Your clips will also be contained in here if you use the Copy to Library option, otherwise it'll keep a pointer to where the clips are stored.

Example workflow.
Let's say I'm working on a big movie. I'll create a Library for the movie. Now I'll create an event for every scene in the movie and a project inside every event for that scene only. I might even create several projects for different versions of each scene.
I will also create an event and a project for the whole film, where I'll place exported or compound clip versions of the individual scenes

If you right click/option click an FCP Library Bundle in Finder you can also navigate the folder structure to get a feel for it.

Keep in mind the example workflow is just one way of working and the way you organise things is entirely up to you. Most of the time I make a new library for everything I do since it's easier to file manage, but if I'm doing a series of related videos they might get chunked into one library with separate events, or if they're really related even the same event sometimes - in the cases where they share most of the same clips.

There is a great free tutorial available at Izzyvideo.com. Very simple and thorough and includes sample media to work with. Another great resource (paid) is Ripple.com. Both are highly recommended.

Ripple also does some nice YouTube videos for free now and then.

Also, the macOS Help menu is actually rather helpful. It's often overlooked but the help pages in there are genuinely good resources.

Thanks for the help. Realizing that a Project is actually a subset of libraries and events instead of the other way around was helpful.
