Reinstalling MacOS on M1 Macs via recovery has two downsides:

- it requires you to be online (even if you use USB offline installer - Mac will still require internet connection!)
- it doesnt reinstall the recovery/firmware itself but only OS itself. (downgrading Monterey recovery to BigSur is not possible this way)

Above downsides can only be solved by DFU flashing with IPSW factory images.
DFU flashing is incomparably faster as well...

Alas, it requires one more Mac or the appointment at the Apple Store.

Since IPSW is signed system image - why not making it possible to download it to specific folder and starting the flashing with specific command from recovery or key combo?

Max system would check if FindMyMac is locked or not.

Best sending this to Apple directly I would think. I doubt they accept feature requests directly from macrumours!

I'd sure like to see something better with regards to installing the OS on an M1 Mac. I spent hours thing weekend backing off Monterey and going back to big sur. The whole process is just not well thought out and way to many things you have to do. Recover mode should be able to install any OS version, not just what you had on it before since it's from the internet anyway, and there should be no resetpassword command needed, nor knowing where the true Mac erase command is. What a major PITA!

I don't even know DFU Mode because I've never needed to use it, but requiring another Mac seems pretty onerous.

These things are ever so much easier to deal with in Windows land.

If you havent used DFU mode - despite BigSur reinstallation - you still have Monterey Recovery.
This was one of the reasons for my post.

To tell you the truth, I didn't look to see what recovery said once I got big sur reinstalled. That's even uglier. Good to know, thanks.
