Feb-6-2010; "safe" to order 27" 2TB i7 iMac??

My wife is taking here college courses, we "save" about $200, I'm ready to buy 27" 2TB i7 iMac, seeing all the threads simply:

-Buy now, it's all safe now
-Wait 4 more weeks for things to flush out....

I can wait but would really like the new iMac now.
 
It is NOT safe to buy an iMac as of yet. When people (including me) receive their week 6 machines I'm sure we'll post results. As of now, no, it isn't safe - if you don't want to wait, go ahead and order, the yellowing is not THAT bad, as it is only noticeable with a completely white screen, and you better be looking for it. Keep in mind Apple will just fix yours in the event that is is yellow. :)
 
If you have an Apple store close by, I would go ahead and buy it now.
Not everyone has had problems with their machine, but if you do you don't want to deal with shipping hassles.
Also, if it has problems you can return it for another, and if you have to do it a few more times, then Apple is supposedly knocking off another $300.

Seems like a win-win situation.
 
Mine would be a build to order, but we do have a store 20 minutes away in Novi, Mich.

They have 2 weeks shipping date now, so if I wait 1-2 weeks to order, then I'd still have it end of Feb possible?
(and issues more clear resolution)

Just our 24" iMac is over used between myself (digital photos0, my wife, and the 2 kids.....I get my time early am or late pm.
 
Go to a store, and get them to take it out the box and test it there and then, that's what I did :)

If one must buy now, one must buy now. But if one can wait 4-6 weeks (for others to confirm first), then I'd wait. Wait for others to jump off the diving board (in the dark night). If wondering, I'm waiting. Waiting for others to tell me their "after jumping" result. As they say, "good comes to those who wait..."...

I'd say pull the trigger if you've got a store that close.

Someone on another thread said the Apple CSR mentioned the 14th? to them, so if it's still a two week order then I'd say you'd most likely be in the clear by the time it gets to you.

Perhaps you may be better served by adding a MacBook Pro since you already have a desktop?

The new i5 MBP's are rumored to be arriving shortly...
 
Safe for me...

My experience was flawless.
Like my older G5, I wanted to get it from B&H mainly because of the tax-savings and i've been a very satisfied customer with them for almost 15yrs.
Noticed Tuesday night that B&H's site finally recieved them back on their stock status. Called them up Wednesday afternoon, asked a sales rep if these were new inventory or if they were sitting for a while. He told me he just got them in and only had 4 left.
Went online, ordered my 27" 2.8 I7, 1TB HD, 4gig of ram. $2199.99 no tax & free 2 day shipping. Shipped out the next day and got it yesterday(Friday) at noon.
Outer brown shipping box(UPS) was in good condition, opened up and inspected the computer and it was perfect.

Out with the old(G5) and in with the new, I connected the iMac and ran it through startup install. After all was done, the first thing that popped into the screen was a System Update(screen flicker one). Tested the screen for the yellow tint. Nothing.

Not safe. When you start hearing reports of people who have had there yellow screens replaced with working ones, then its safe.

Just curious, but why are the experiences of those who returned screens for yellow-tinge more valid than those of us who received tinge-free iMacs to begin with?

Believe it or not, in spite of what you read in these forums and elsewhere I think we're still in the majority.

How many have you returned personally?

There is some speculation now that the handling of iMacs in shipping could be playing a part in the display issues as well.

Yes there is a yellow screen issue. Yes Apple acknowledges that.

So YES it will be fixed.

EDIT SaSaSushi that looks very plausible. Maybe Apple have minimised their packaging too much. IMO the older iMacs that had the polystyrene over the top completely were better packaged than these that just have the ears.

Look on the bright side, there are worst problems out there like having to worry that your car might unexpectedly start accelerating without notice or have a brake failure when trying to stop.
Or having the land underneath your house just give way and put you in a landslide.
Having a small discoloration on your computer screen is nothing.
There are worst things out there. THIS is a small issue that can be resolved.

Well, I guess I feel that those that have the yellow screen knows exactly what the problem is and where I'm coming from. Those that are lucky enough not to....well....don't and cant relate.

I mean you say your screen doesn't show yellow tinge, and your probably right, but what if I saw your screen in person and said that I could clearly see it, and you couldn't? What would that mean? Who's eyes are bad?

When start hearing "My screen had yellow tinge and apple replaced with a perfect uniform panel, thanks Apple"! I will probably reorder an i7.

I personally have returned three i7's.

1. Bad drive...well, loud at least.
2. Yellow tinge
3. Yellow tinge and flicker

I see, you're one of those people who believe that the yellow tinge is universal and the only variable factor is that some people cannot detect it, even though it exists, however slightly?

To answer your question, I'd have to say you were seeing things in regards to my iMac if you were to say it had a problem. I don't think that would ever happen though.

I assure you, I'm quite sensitive to issues of color uniformity on LCD panels and I am very aware of what the yellow tinge looks like. I've seen both minor yellow gradients as well as horribly affected iMacs.

You are, of course, free to believe whatever you choose.

I personally have returned three i7's.

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you either got a full refund or that you will get a perfect machine on the 4th try.

No, not at all......Well.....maybe a little. :) Either way, I would still feel better hearing that the issue is fixed from someone that can see it. I have looked at a minimum of like 20 27" iMacs and they ALL suffer from the same yellow tinge.

Who can say. I'm I seeing it, or are you NOT seeing it? I know, ship me your i7 and I will test it and tell you what I see, and then ship it back....probably.

Anyway, I will end up getting another once the screens are figured out. And possibly the grumbling drives....and the flicker...and the melted glass...and the cracked glass...and the doa's...Oh wait have the doa's been fixed?
 
I have owned 6 21.5" imacs and all of them were yellow. I have seen 3 more and also were affected.

I think that a lot of people who say their imacs are fine don't know where to look for the problem.

This is very widespread.

My one question throughout all of this is why more people dont do this, I guess most people arent used to retail workers doing something so bothersome, apple store people will jump up and down like monkeys if makes you happy.

Well, I can't say what you would say but... ok, this is getting tiring. :)

I just know I'm not color-blind and I did return a 24-inch iMac for gradient issues. If anything I'm on the sensitive side with color defects. I've seen pictures of screens posted here where there was some debate on the existence of the yellow tinge and I can see it where others don't. We'll leave it at that and again best of luck to you in getting an iMac to your satisfaction.

Agreed. My i7 is a week 6 and shipped today. Predicted arrival is Friday by 4:00 pm but hopefully sooner. I paid for 2-3 day shipping.

I agree, but if you wait 4-6 weeks, then you may as well wait for the speed bump that's going to come sometime in the next 2-3 months...
