Ok so I'm working on getting Windows XP installed for my classes that start up next week, which require a few windows only programs. I backed up all of my information, ran bootcamp and partitioned 32 gb for windows. I inserted my (brand new) windows XP (sp2) disk and began the install. After copying the initial files etc it reached the point where it says "Starting windows..." or something along those lines and then would proceed to the dreaded "Blue Screen of Death."

After doing this a few times, all of them resulting the same, I gave up and hopped back onto Leopard to do some research online. I found that this blue screen of death could be caused by a faulty windows disc (this of course made me extremely happy considering the amount of money I had very recently spent on it) and then bugging all of my friends to figure out whether or not they had their own windows xp disc for me to borrow.

The best i could come up with was a windows home disc from my friend's old Dell but I figured better then nothing and proceeded to try the install. This time I made it past the "Starting windows..." portion of the install to the part where it prompts you to hit ENTER to install, R to repair, etcetera etcetera. However, upon hitting enter, nothing happens. I pushed other buttons on my keyboard, R, Enter, even caps lock (the little light wouldnt light up). Any idea what would cause this or a way to fix it? Perhaps plugging in an external keyboard? Any help would be greatly appreciated as my experiences with the "genius" bar havent been all too pleasant.

When you partitioned and then rebooted with the disk in, did you "reformat" the C: bootcamp part to make it bootable (from within setup). Otherwise it will never boot (or even install after copying the setup files..).

Sorry if you did this but you seem to be getting stuck where I got stuck, because I didn't read the instructions before i dived in.

As has been noted, you MUST reformat with the Windows install CD before proceeding; the BC partitioning alone does not do that.

Yes I did reformat with the disc and I have the Installation guide sitting right next to me. I have tried doing this multiple times with the same result. As soon as the installing reaches the point where it says "Starting Windows..." it gives me the blue screen of death.

I might suggest launching Boot Camp Assistant and removing the BC partition, then starting the process over from scratch, and verify each step as you go. I'm pretty positive you overlooked something small (but important). If you get to an error point, note what step you were on and get back to us with that detail.

Also, which Mac (specifically) do you have? Model, version/era, OS, that stuff.

Here's the Apple Support site for Boot Camp: http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/

Im running a Macbook Pro 15", 2 GHz running Leopard. I Have gotten all of the updates both through the software updater and looking online at their support site for firmware updates and everything.

I have already redone the process many times, completely redoing the partition and the install and everything. I have read the manual step by step a few times now and I'm sure I havent overlooked anything.

I dont get any error messages other than the blue screen of death that occurs after all the initial files are copied and it says it is Starting Windows...

P.S. I apologize about the bump, just sorta anxious to get this working so i can get my schoolwork done. Should i just spring for parallels?

Apparently there are some issues with 10.5.1 & Boot Camp right now, more related to partition size (which I'm experiencing right now), but that may not be the case with you, if you're selecting the default partition size.

Anyway, Parallels would be a good choice, but it's a shame you can't Boot Camp the install and run Parallels off of that. That's what I did initially, so I have two levels of horsepower depending on my need (though in all honesty, Parallels has met every need, including running SQL & Oracle db's simultaneously). I really don't need the full Windows hardware capture, apparently, ad I don't play games on it.
