First off, I'm mainly converting .MKV to Apple Tv, so my questions are directed at that.

Now i've read a bunch of posts, with different preferences. So my first questions is, is the "2 pass option" necessary?

second, how do i get the videos to be fullscreen on my HDTV? it's widescreen. with the black bars on top and bottom. Is there a way to rid this?

Third, what are the best setting for visualhub for Bluray .MKV files? please explain in detail.

Thx and please reply!!

The fist pass allows the encoder to preview the video before starting the actual encode.
Using it will help to reduce macroblocking and maintain a more optimal bitrate throughout. That said it's not a drastic difference. 2 pass is not "necessary", but I'd recommend using it if you have time. Especially for videos with a lot of action.

If the video isn't 16x9 you may need to manually crop the edges to force it to the desired aspect.
