I got off the phone from rogers and fido and both said that it was possible to buy an iphone 3gs without the data plan, but you would have to pay a $200 premium. However, after searching through the internet, many other people have said that both rogers and fido changed their rules and now iphones can only be bought if activated with a data plan...can anyone else confirm this?

Also, if that is the case (where you have to get a data plan), can i buy the iphone with the $60/month plan with data included, than cancel the data, pay the cancellation fees for the data (i think its $200+???), and keep the voice plan only, would they still allow me to use the iphone, or would the iphone automatically be locked? I am waiting for better data plans to come out because 500mb is nothing nowadays for internet surfing.

I'd like to know too. I intended to get my wife a 16G 3G refreshed that was advertised from FIDO as available w/o data. The day I called to purchase the offer was revoked. I was pissed.

I've been waiting for an opportunity and have heard the $200 thing but so far I can't corroborate your comments that data is a must.

i called Fido only and they said that without the data plan, its an extra $200 for the iphone, however, i read on a forum, a person who works at fido said you cannot get an iphone without the data unless you pay full price for the iphone without the contract.

Can anyone else confirm this????? So many people are giving different informations, including actual employees.

and as for canceling the data plan, isnt it just $100 cancellation fee? but i dunno if it will lock the phone or not, anyone who experienced this would like to share?

Both rogers and fido still have the $30 6GB plan right now.

Yup, I got my iPhone 3GS from Rogers and it is mandatory to sign up for a voice and data plan if you want to get it for $199/299. (I got the 6GB/month for $30)

i had to get data i was pissed because then i could have just got the iphone 3g from before but i had to get it with a data plan my monthly bill is 70$ with data and 200 mins with my5 and i get to tether till dec 31

darn it...i looked it up, the offer ends on sept 16!!!! and my contract with telus ends in mid november

is this the same for US users as well where having the data plan is mandatory? we're you guys able to cancel the data plan later but keep the voice plan?

btw, off topic but this reminds of something funny, i used to work at tim hortons and we were trying to recruit more workers, so all employees had to wear t-shirts that say "JOIN US", a old man came up and said "Why the hell would i want to join the US???"

In the US data plans are mandatory yes.

As for the telus contract and the 6gb offer, telus may very possible be offering the iphone by the time your contract is up so hang in there. They are launching the GSM network this month. And rumors are pointing toward the iPhone being with telus.

Also I started my contract off with the 6gb plan. However, after a month i realized I can't hit even 500mb. Since in canada we can't really stream much music since most of those apps aren't offered here I don't really use up a ton of data. Don't worry about the 6gb issue.

Yes data is a must now. Bt here's what I did and cheaper in the long run. Got the data plan and then the phone was 199$, 2 hours later cancelled my data plan and paid the $100 penalty.

So the phone cost $300 but still cheaper

Are you with Rogers or Fido? I am thinking of signing up the 3 year plan. If what you said is true about cancelling the data plan only cost you $100 penalty then this is a very good deal.

im with rogers. I believe Fido charges $200.

and you can still cancel your data, and if you want to confirm why not just call and ask very quick

Yep, talked to the fido rep. Canceling fido data cost $200 and you can't do it hte first month or you pay full hit I think...

i was recently able to get a rogers retention plan for 25 bucks and asked if for the iphone 3g without data.

right now, it seems Rogers customer service reps are unsure of what the policy is.

rep 1: said it was impossible to get it without date
rep 2: possible but would cost $599
rep 3: possible and would cost $275

so after the third call, i ordered my iPhone 3G and it is apparently coming in the mail.

i got a call from rogers a day later and the guy was like, the shipping dpt might not ship it out because there is no data attached.
but then i called again and they said it was coming.

sooo i really dont know what to believe at the moment lol
