Is there a way I can get notification centre alerts for email without having the mail.app run in the background? (i.e. like push on my iOS devices, using gmail through exchange)

Also I don't use iMessage at all but may in the future and am wondering if the same applies there, i.e. does the Messages.app need to be running for notification center to display iMessages or is that pushed from iCloud regardless of whether the app is running or not?

Liking ML so far...

Cheers!

I don't know about mail, but I do know that messages on iMessage are pushed even if you don't have the app open! You get both a little red notification on the icon, and a banner.

I don't think it works like that on mail, unfortunately.

so far iMessage doesn't have to be running to get the notification but email does. at least on my ML.

Thanks for the extremely quick replies. So I'll keep the mail.app running in the background then. Maybe they will allow full-on push without the need for the mail app in the future...
