Im trying to download steam on my new iMac 24 inch M1 Big Sur 11.4, and I keep getting this error. I did everything I could I used the xattr command in the terminal, I allowed permission to everyone for privacy and security, and nothing. I can't get it to open up. I downloaded this same app on my MacBook Pro 2020 intel computer with no problem. Does anyone have a REAL fix for this?? thank you.

Where are you downloading it from? Even if it's not native, it should still run.

Maybe it’s not a translation (i.e., Rosetta 2) problem rather a Big Sur compatibility issue. I don’t know. R2 being the wall depends if Steam uses Intel specific instructions for optimization.

What can’t Rosetta 2 translate?

Rosetta cannot translate kernel extensions or Virtual Machine apps that virtualize x86_64 computer platforms. Developers should be aware that Rosetta is also unable to translate AVX, AVX2, and AVX512 vector instructions.

I do recall seeing a similar error when launching one of my migrated apps. I don’t recall which app it was, although, I could do without it moving forward so I trashed it.

Unhelpful, Redditors have mixed reports of whether or not Steam works on M1.

So, I tried launching Steam and was shown (what I’m assuming is) the same error as the OP.

The explanation (i.e., clicking on the ? icon) is general info probably carried through a few macOS User Guides.

Well… ?

Just as a troubleshooting point of verification, I downloaded the Steam DMG from here:
So, it should be legit, untampered.

I'm also not seeing an Open Anyway (or whatever the specific wording is) option in the Privacy & Security section of Sys Prefs.

I am having trouble with it intermittently not working. It checks for the update, updates if necessary, and then dumps on sub launching its funky Steam bundle in the Application Folder/Steam.
Has anybody found a work round?

Mine just checks and updates, if necessary, bounces, and then quits. No crash.
Trashing the Steam.appbundle folder and rebooting seems to fix it for one or two runs. I think most of the games can be launched directly.
