File Sharing a Synology DS211+ NAS in Lion Server

Hi All,

I am currently running OD / VPN / Daylite Server etc. on a lion server, with file sharing going through the Synologys own user interface that handles permissions and structure of folders.

I am hoping that it is possible to combine the two, as it would be best to have one share point on the NAS that is administered by the Lion server to allow for easy user management. At the moment, I can not add a network drive from the Synology as a share point though in server.app (as I guess you can't double share something on the same network!).

How would I go about being able to use server.app for the sharing of folders and destinations on the NAS (connected into the switch - not directly to the server)?

NAS volume as a share point on SL/Lion server?

I have the exact same set up and have always been interested in achieving the same result.

It is a pain having to administer two directories of permissions, groups and shares. Unfortunately i have not had the time to find a solution.

Is it possible to use a NAS volume as a share point on SL/Lion server?

I have been pondering for a while...

What is needed is to make the NAS 'bind' (I use this term freely) to the server so as to appear as an ext usb/fw hdd would. I am pretty sure that the drive must be unique to the server in order to be shared, much like you can't choose to share a network computer / folder that is already shared on the network to your computer. Conflicting identical names and address would be hard to distinguish I guess and create loops in the LAN.

Without the NAS being plugged into the server itself, it must be shared on the network for the server to see it, so completely removing the sharing is difficult. I remember seeing a 3rd party app for administering and creating share points - will see if I can find it and give it a go. Might just be that this is all down to the server.app ui, and it is in fact possible!

for the permissions side of things, you could configure the NAS to use LDAP. Then on the NAS assign folder permissions to domain groups, including the group the server user belongs too. then just mount the NAS from the server or computers as usual.

can you confirm that you want the server to provide the NAS disks/folders/whatever to clients as sharepoints from the server?

Yes, I really want to be able to do all the sharing through the server. Is this possible, or is the NAS going to have to share it all on the network?

the easiest is to let the NAS handling the sharing, using LDAP to authenticate the users.

It could be possible to use iSCSI to connect the server and NAS, switch off sharing on the NAS, and then the sharepoints would be available from the server (this is theory, I have read about it, but not tried this)

going to wait until thursday to start trying to implement into the company - it looks very promising - not just for sharing the drives through the server, but also for expansion. thanks for putting me on to this! I will do some screenshots and write a bit about my experience!
