I ordered a 2TB Western Digital USB 2.0 hard drive over the weekend. I'm thinking that I'll finally have the space to be able to rip all of my DVDs for ease of use.
Problem is my current set up is letting me down. Currently I have a 1TB WD drive plugged into my AEBS (about 3 years old). I use Nullriver's MediaLink to share that Airport Disk from my 5+ year old MacBoook Pro to my PS3. Aside from having to make sure my MBP is on, has MediaLink running correctly, and making sure my network Disk is mounted, the video stutters quite a bit during playback, even on simple and smaller 130MB 30 minute avi's. My PS3 is connected via ethernet and my MBP connects via 802.11n.
What I'd like to do is maybe plug my new 2TB drive directly into my PS3. Thing is I'd like to still be able to access that data over the network on my MBP. I find that I watch the shows about 95% of the time on my PS3, and rarely on my MBP but I do need it networked so I can also update and add video from my computer. This way there wouldn't be any lag from the network streaming, and I could also browse and play videos much quicker than I do now.
So what are people's thoughts or experiences? I realize that if there is a way to get this to work, I'd probably need the PS3 on in order to access it on the network. Don't know if there's a work around for that. Also I have thought about getting an Apple TV or something similar to play videos on my bedroom TV later which would impact this design. But that's just an idea for now.
And in regards to the stuttering issue I currently have, I've got the most recent updates on my MBP, AEBS, and Nullriver. It started (I think) with Snow Leopard and I'd presume that it's either older hardware with newer technology (802.11n) or that the quality of the hardware is degrading, but if anyone has any suggestions to this let me know.
