File sharing-processing RAW files

Hi,
I am a professional wedding photographer. been using iMac with 5 harddisk hook up to the iMac with RAID0 and one space drive as a copy of the RAID regularly.

Anyway, I just purchase a Macbook Pro Retina highest spec.

I like to be able to process my RAW photos from both iMac and Laptop.

NAS is currently expensive as a consideration.
"Transporter" - a dropbox type is my current consideration but speed is my issue here with huge RAW files.

I tried connecting iMac and Laptop via bluetooth and use the file sharing function. it works but it is way too slow.

I like to know what people are doing to have a decent speed and file share.

syncing is currently not the issue. i think it's the read/write speed that is the issue from the laptop reading from the harddisk hooked to the iMac.
i will have a closer look at these links you sent.

Gigabit Ethernet is your best bet. You can use a crossover cable if you don't have a Gigabit-capable switch. Use Category 5e or better cable.

I'd say the same. But now with newer Macs you can use a Thunderbolt cable for that purpose and it is even faster. It is ONLY good for tiny network of two computers but is currently the fastest way to move data on a Mac.

Have you figured out a good backup method for the NAS? Most people either end up buying more than one NAS and/or using an on-line backup service

Synology 1813+ comes with 8 bays for HDD.
I am currently going to first put two 4TB of WD red HDD in it. They will mirror each other. In term of backup, i have a seperate seagate 4TB which i regularly copied my latest wedding photo folder into it. I prefer physical HDD backup rather than online as it can take ages to download them. I can store these seperate backup in a different location.

When the time comes, I will get 2 more HDD to increase the space.

You may also want to consider rotating 4TB backup drives to an offsite location, ideally a bank safety deposit box. Just get if offsite in case of theft, fire, flood, ...etc. Do that after at least when every major shoot is done and imported. A bride and her mother will never forgive you for lost shots.
