Ok, I'm a Mac dinosaur...I admit it. I've been working with a Mac since the 90's, my first work computer was a Quadra 900, and my first personal computer was a Performa 6115. I loved how flexible the Mac was, I could work anyway I wanted. File storage was usually directly on the Macintosh HD, and the desktop was for temporary use only.

Through all the Classic operating systems, OS 7-9, and the various iterations of OSX (until Mojave), I've always been able to click on the hard drive and drag files directly into the open window. With Mojave (and later), this is no longer possible. When I updated to Big Sur, all the work files I've stored on the Macintosh HD have been moved to a sub volume called Macintosh HD Data, and buried deep within the folder structure.

I need to change how I work on files and store them on my computer. I'd like them off the desktop (as this does tend to slow the machine down), but I need to access them in only a click or two. Where they're at now doesn't work, and I can't make an alias of the Macintosh HD Data folder.

Where should files be stored? I will ultimately upload completed projects to a corporate server, however this may take a week or two. Of course, there are a number of files that I would prefer to keep on my computer directly (fonts, personal and professional documents, art files, etc).

How does the rest of the Apple community store their files?

For me:
  • I use the Sidebar of the Finder window to quickly move to my homedir, or my Documents folder, or my Desktop folder, as well as adding also to the sidebar various project folders that I work with frequently
  • I get a lot of efficiency and convenience out of using the Columns view in the Finder window; it helps me keep track of and move about folder hierarchies and locations much quicker
  • I largely store everything in a folder hierarchy under my homedir; I don't actually use the Documents folder for much
  • I tend to keep several Finder windows open to the project folders that I'm working on regularly

Thanks...I'll take a look at the homedir; that may be the best spot to store my files. Or at least create a master folder with organized subfolders.
