I assume like many people I'm simply trying to find what formats the Apple TV will read and inside that container what it will read. Like Most I'm trying to convert MKV's and the like, that are in 720 and contain 5.1 AC3. VisualHub will convert the file but you are converting the video once again and usually with Skipping and stuttering. Next I can open then in QT Pro and its looks great but have found no way around a container that Apple TV will read. I have Tried Mp4, Mov and M4v formats with no luck. I have passed thru video in various formats tried pasting in AC3 but none have worked..

So as I see it now.. other than converting using VH has anyone had success with QT Pro NOT converting but passing the video through and somehow applying the 5.1 audio in a container Apple TV will play?

Passing through the H.264 will never work as the "scene" mkvs that you are undoubtedly talking about were encoded using features (i.e. a higher level) than what the AppleTV can play.

You will need to re-encode them, or figure out how to rip them off of your own discs (you do own them, right?) and do the initial compression yourself. Good luck.

Well... thanks for the update.. pretty much what I assumed..
I guess there is no way to do then at the moment...

VisualHub doesnt do a great job and Quicktime doesnt retain the 5.1 or atleast not that I'm aware of.. so I guess I will just wait till something better comes along...

How are you getting skipping and stuttering with VisualHub?

Are your files 25 fps PAL sources? You need to manually set the advanced options to force 25 fps. Also, make sure you're not going above the 5000 kbps bitrate the Apple TV maxes out at. It's best to stay at 4500 or below in the advanced settings.

Yeah getting stuttering or sticking of the frames.. plays just fine except for these glitches.. In the log there are random frame errors which I assume are those spots. I have been using VH without changing any settings I guess I can give your advice a try and see what comes about..

Thanks
