I am trying to transfer files from my white Macbook to my new refurb 2.8 Imac. I am using firewire 6 pin to connect. Then using migration assistant, but transfer always freezes about 1/3 of the way. I've tried moving just my photos no apps but same thing happens. Only way to unfreeze is turn laptop off then I get improper device removal. Am I doing something wrong?

Also wondering what is all this stuff in my document folder? 10,000 items, lots of pics, icons and html sheets. Any idea what all that is? Can it safely be deleted?

Thanks for helping :)

You could possibly have a corrupt file locking up the transfer, but that is usually associated with an error message. Try manually moving the files but in smaller groups rather than one giant drag and drop. This can allow you to zero in on the culprit.

As for all the stuff in your documents folder. Some applications annoyingly add folders there upon installation holding various installation files, such as MS Office. They may or may not be needed. Also where you saving web pages? These generate folders containing items you described.

Honestly, I wouldn't bother with migration assistant, and I'm purely speaking from my experience.

I recently bought a 24" iMac, tried using migration asst. 3 separate times. First time it was freezing, then when I finally did a clean install on the new computer again and did the migration asst. from the beginning, it worked, but my mobileme got all effed up on my new computer, the control panel kept freezing and so on. So then I decided I had enough. I just did a clean install, and copied stuff over manually.

If you copy your itunes folder in the library and your iphoto library you can just import them onto the new computer easily.

How do I do it manually? I tried moving just photos but that didn't seem to work either. I tried clicking on the Hd icon but that also caused freeze.

I was just now able to transfer from my Emac, I think, but where did my photos go? Shouldn't they automatically go into Iphoto?

Thanks again
