Ok, i'm pretty sure this is where I would put this, if not i'm sorry. I was thinking about it and thought of a program that might be a good idea, so I was going to try to make it, and then remembered that I have no programing skill what so ever. So here it is, i'm laying it out to the world in the hopes that someone reads this and makes this program. The idea is a iTunes style program for your movies. Same basic interface and such, but for your movies that you have backed up on to your hard drive, hence the name film vault. The copyright law says that you are alot to make backups of things for personal use, so this would be only for storage on the computer and playback on the computer, no ability to burn a new copy of the DVD just for backup and enjoyment. If someone makes this, great, if i'm stupid for even sujesting it, i'm ok, with that to, it was just kind of stuck in my head and had to get it out there.

you have an idea

A program that can rip a DVD and also play back that ripped DVD. Essentually what you are saying or I might have added to it. But the problem is, how do you encode it. Because you want it to be a full back up with nice quality so that means you neet 9 gigs of space for each dvd if you would just rip it. Or the encoder would need to be good quality for low space, an incompatable with burning software. Then if the iBox comes along, you have a media center peice.

Another problem is, what keeps a person from going though the files using Finder, picking what they want and burining it. You would need to encrypt the DVD to keep people from doing that an straight burning them to a DVD for play back, but your schema will most likely get cracked by someone.

Great idea, and it will take off if the iBox comes and you can make it compatable. It will be a hit with everyone. But what will keep Pirates from burning the rip, that is where you need to foucus.

This came to mind late, what will keep people from making back ups of movies they rent. They haven't payed full price for it, and your software will let them make a copy for their viewing pleasure whenever they want. Breaking the law again. Sorry to pop bubbles.

If you want to rip a DVD and burn it there are plenty of programs out there to do it. This new program that was described, even if it assists in that process really doesn't matter as the tools are already easily available.

I don't know that there currently is a tool to be like a media player. You can always have a "DVD" directory and rip individual DVD's to that directory and open the "disc" with something like VideoLan for the time being.

I think the main idea of the program is that it organizes your movie files.
