Filters and Animoji effects, how do you take the picture?!

I'm sure I must be missing something obvious, but the new filters and Animoji effects that are activated by hitting the little 5 pointed star icon are baffling me. I can’t figure out how to actually take a photo once I select whatever filter I want. You can hit ‘done’, but that just kicks me back out to the message thread with no saved photo or effect.

Take the picture first, then apply effects post picture. I was confused at first and was having the same trouble. I feel it should be allowed pre and post though.
