Final Cut Express II for an iBook?

These are the system tech requirement for FCE II:

a) Macintosh computer with a 350MHz PowerPC G4 or G5 processor and AGP graphics card.
b) RT Extreme requires a 500MHz PowerPC G4 (550MHz for PowerBook G4) or G5 processor or any dual PowerPC G4 or G5 processors.
c) Mac OS X v10.2.5 or later.
d) QuickTime 6.4 or later.
e) 384MB of RAM (512MB required for RT Extreme).
f) 40MB of available disk space required for installation.


I have a 12" iBook and wondering if it is enough to handle the video editing software.
a) Not sure because I have a G4 800mhz, not a PowerPC G4. Is it okay?
b) Same - not a PowerPC
c) Check
d) Check
e) Check
f) Check

PowerPC is the kind of Processor.

I think you are confusing it with PowerMac. Anyway, you should get by fine.

I don't think it will work. I have a friend with an iMac 500 mhz and it wouldn't let him even install FCP Express since all he has is a G3

As long as your iBook is a G4 you'll be okay. If it's a G3 then see the above post.

It's off the topic a little, but have you considered additional storage? Video takes up an enormous amount of space and you'll find a 30GB drive filling up with just a couple modesly sized projects. It's also suggested to use a different disk or partition for video to avoid fragmentation problems. Of course if you're just doing little 1-2 minute movies I wouldn't worry about space or fragmentation very much.

However, if you read correctly, you'd notice he's using an 800MHz G4, not a 500MHz G3. FCE will run fine on the iBook.

I agree with the sentiments regarding storage; I have 80GB and 60GB internal HDD and I still feel a little short on space at times.
30GB HDD would be almost out of the question for anything but relatively short videos.
