I would like to download final cut pro on my macbook pro. My processor is 2.8 ghz intel core i5. Is this sufficient?

My -guess- is it will be fine.
What may be more important is which version of the OS you're using (as FCP may have "minimum requirements" there).

I'd download the trial version and just "see how things go"...

Thanks for getting back to me. I'm using Mohave. trying out the trial is a good idea. I wonder though if the trial has all the functions of the paid version, and if that makes any difference as far as what processing power is needed.

The trial is the full version. How much power you need is based on what you ask it to do. Do you have the experience and knowledge to make any pro video app work hard?

The product description in the App Store lists the technical requirements. The number of CPU cores and speed are not even listed among those requirements. Minimum RAM is 4 GB (more if you're doing 4K editing), a Metal-capable graphics card (with at least 1 GB VRAM for 4K editing) (see https://support.apple.com/HT205073 for a list of Metal-capable Macs - every MacBook Pro made since 2012)...

Yes, cores and processor speed do matter - basically, "time is money." So, is there money on the line here (meeting broadcast deadlines, finishing jobs quickly because you have more jobs that can be done, etc.)? There are pros that need heavy hardware and need to make their software do every trick in the book, and there are also pros pumping out fairly simple videos that demand little of their software and hardware.
