Ok, so i have asked a few times and got different answers.

I have a 4k TV that I got for my 2009 Mac Pro running a GTX970.

The TV has HDMI 2.0 input and supports 60hz over it.

My Mac pro refuses to allow 60Hz. I have heard I can hack it, but I seem unable to disable SIP as I don't have a Mac keyboard (I have a K811 bluetooth keyboard and a GT120for the boot screen access).

Anyway, I am going to sell the 4k TV if I can't get 60hz to work. in a final ditch attempt before selling, if I was to get an active Displayport 1.2 - HDMI 2.0 adapter such as https://www.amazon.com/Vantec-Displ...yPort+1.2+to+HDMI+2.0a+Active+Adapter+4K@60Hz

Will it allow me to select 60Hz output?

You should be able to get into the Recovery OS by holding Alt+R, Mac keyboard or not.

My 680 can apparently do 4k @ 60Hz over DisplayPort, but I don't have a 4k panel to test with unfortunately, sorry.

That's mainly OSX problem, not the card.
It's an Nvidia problem. The GTX680 does not do HDMI 2.0 & as per the Nvidia specs only supports 3840x2160 at 30Hz or 4096x2160 at 24Hz over HDMI but supports 4096x2160 (including 3840x2160) at 60Hz over Displayport. This is a hardware limitation & apple whatever the OS.

Well, it kind of seems that OS X crashes when I do a boot with the command+r keys.

Ok, so I got SIP disabled and installed SwitchResX on the 10 day trial.

I have created a custom resolution and set to 60Hz.

I closed out SwitchResX to save and rebooted the computer which should now allow me to select the resolution I created, but it doesn't appear in the selectable list, and is only in Custom Resolutions with status uninstalled.

Any ideas why I can't select it?

Final update.

IT IS ALIVE!!!!

SwitchResX and the clock pixel patch alone are not enough to force HDMI2.0 to display 4K @60Hz. You need an adapter that will trick the Mac into thinking the TV is actually a Displayport 1.2 device.

I bought this one and now have beautiful smooth 60Hz 4K! ahhhhhhhhh.....

For reference, this is the adapter I bought:

Good to hear that you got it working. Shouldn't the adapter work without SwitchResX?

Nice. I bought same adapter and was unable to get 60hz 4k resolution with my gtx680. I never tried SwitchResX and clock pixel combo though. ended up returning 4k TV and got U3415W instead. This one works great, except for stupid OSX disabling keyboard sound control via keyboard
