So i really want to get new latest ipad and keyboard to use as my daily driver.
There are few things I just nedd to wrap my head around as I know there are limitations.

one thing is this stupid external monitor support. I know you can watch Netflix in full screen on a tv with hdmi cable - but I need a video app where I can add video files and subtile files and play in full screen on external monitor. Been googling for this but cant get a good answer. Anyone?

iPad does not support dual monitor like Mac. This is a limit of iPadOS.
Get a M1 MacBook Air if you want that experience.

It does. Netflix can do this.
OK, so it's on a per-app basis.
I would just go MacBook Air for that usage.
Not all app supports this, or to be precise, very few apps actually implement proper dual monitor support that is available in ipados.
If you have some serious dual monitor use cases, give up on iPad and get an M1 MacBook Air.

Edit: turns out some other video apps might support ipados "dual monitor" mode. My bad.

I know not all apps support this. The only thing I asked for was ONE video app that could support this for my video files, nothing more. I do not have ”serious dual monitor use” besides this.

You can display the iPad on external monitor, but it wasn't really full screen. I got black bar on the side of it...
My subscription for Netflix is over since few days, so can't test that with it. Sorry

Ok. Very specific. Wish you enjoy your experience after finding the best app for this exact case, or someone updates their app to support it.
Apart from VLC, other players you might want to research are nPlayer and Infuse.
Dunno about Infuse but I’m against nPlayer simply because it hasn’t been updated for the better part of the past half decade. And I doubt free version supports dual monitor. But, wont hurt just trying.

If you want frustration in your life, just use an iPad without any access to use a computer (Mac, PC).
The iPad can do many things a Mac can, but the things it can't will make you want to pull your hair out — and it will always be that way by design.

The most serious issues for me, the ones that are dealbreakers each on their own, are:

- Simultaneous audio control! My pulse rises every time my music or podcast stops because I take a quick glance at a security camera app or a YouTube video. What’s worse, it doesn’t even start again automatically when I’m done.
- Audio output choice (connect an HDMI adapter and your sound is forced through that and only that)
- No Xcode (not possible to compile and run an iPad app on the iPad)
- No virtual machines
- No multi-user support
- Frustratingly bad support for printing, even if the printer supports AirPrint
- No disk image access
- No clipboard manager support

It all depends on what you do with your iPad, some people manage better than others. I manage most of my tasks with an iPhone and iPad combo, but still need to boot up a Mac for various tasks - editing complex PDF files (pre-filled invoice templates) / clean restore of iOS/iPadOS devices / printing on any printer without AirPrint / torrenting. Some web platforms, like WordPress and Squarespace are not so well optimised for touch input. Some folks have run into issues with files corruption importing/exporting them. It can be fun trying to find workarounds and solutions for iPadOS if you have enough time for it, else it can indeed become quite annoying.

Ok thanks. None of that is an issue to me.

Try editing multiple word docs or copying large blocks of cells from multiple excel files to one file. Any task that requires multiple windows or documents open is frustrating on an iPad.
I tried to go all iPad but for general productivity it’s pretty bad compared to a desktop os.

I'd encourage you to try it out. It may be exactly what you're hoping. I did it for 5 months last year and it was a good experience. You won't know unless you try it. If it ends up not working well for your needs, you'll do something else. Go for it.

#5 is right. VLC should support full screen on TV and you can add video file + subtitle file to your iCloud (or other cloud services you like) and it will play that file just fine.

Sounds like you may need OPlayer HD. Check it out in app store. Read description. I think it checks all your boxes for subtitles, local save and external monitor support where the aspect ratio is even adjustable through the app. Cheers!

Safari on iOS (and all browsers) does not work properly on every website. Countless times I've had to go back to my Mac to visit a website that isn't working right on iOS.

Since you already have a Mac, your question for this thread is rhetorical- are you going to toss your Mac in the trash and go solo iPad?

I love how people are defending the Mac here even though the decision has already been made. I started a thread a long time ago about having ditched every iPad I had ever owned after 6 months, however as my usage changed I now find myself living the iPad-only life. 5 months and counting without owning a Mac! (Why does this feels like celebrating sobriety? ?)

Yes, it is not really appropriate to answer an iPad specific "how-to" question with "buy a Mac". I wonder how the Mac people would react to similar "how to" questions about Macs with the answer "buy a winPC".

True. On some websites the issues can be resolved by asking for a desktop version of the site in Safari, yet this is not an obvious solution for many users.

VLC is quite versatile and can also play stuff from our local networks, including NAS, etc., which eliminates the need for uploading things to the cloud.
