My ringer switch popped off my 3GS about a month ago and I purchased Auto Silent to help fix the problem. But Auto Silent is not really an ideal solution for this problem. Sounds get stuck, vibration support is absent, and other quirks about it made it at best a tolerable workaround.

I tried all the other ringer switch apps on Cydia too and there were very few. None of them worked the way I needed...an easy software switch for ring/silent mode that actually worked.

I was just browsing through Cydia and saw that on 2/19 a new SBSettings toggle was released for this very purpose, and it works...and it's free!

It's called "Ringer/Silent Toggle for SBSettings" and it's by Tom Zickel

You even get the ringer/silent icon pop-up that happens with a working hardware switch. The only minor issue is that I'd love for it to throw up an icon in the MenuBar telling me it's on ringer or silent (since my switch is stuck, I can't tell from the actual hardware switch.) Also, the SBSettings icon is just a blank generic icon...but that's just polish. It works great.

I tried, they said I must have used excessive force and therefore wasn't covered under warranty. They kind of have a point...i had to use needle nose pliers to push the switch back and forth after the metal popped off. So that deformed the plastic a little bit. I took it into the store once I had some free time (but in the mean time had to use the pliers.) They basically told me they couldn't accept that story and my only option was to pay $200. I told them I just wouldn't replace it. There's no way for them to know when the deformation of the plastic happened, and I understand that, but I didn't have the luxury of being in an Apple store when my switch popped off.
 
how did it pop of in the first place i have like one scratch on my iphone ( scratch that i have a couple) but its only from putting and taking off the case

Unlike you I don't have enough free time in a day to post 14 times on this forum where I could have instead used that time to walk into an Apple store and shown them what happened. I have a job that requires my phone to be on but on silent. No other tool would accomplish this at the time. It's obvious that you've read dumber things on this forum so why don't you calm down a bit with the hyperbole. It makes you sound inexplicably defensive because your initial theory was wrong. Pathetic.

I really don't know. I just took it out of my pocket and flipped it with my thumb and it went flying. It had been loose since day 1, but i never thought it would come off since it seemed that was a common problem. I was working at a hospital when it happened and I couldn't find it on the floor.

They were tiny, rubber-tipped, needle-nosed pliers that only damaged the little plastic piece to which the metal ringer switch attaches because of the necessary compression force to grip it (don't have much torque with a lever arm that small.) They are used for electrical work.

But by all means keep going. It's entertaining to watch you keep jamming your foot in your mouth. :)

He used the pliers AFTER the switch already broke off.

My switch broke off also after having the phone for only a few months - the apple store replaced the phone under warranty for me though.
 
My previous iPhone 2G used to have a switch that was very loose and would turn to silent just by putting it in my pocket.
So it's a common problem with them. Maybe bring it in again and hope the Apple rep is more sympathetic than the last one.

They wouldn't have replaced your phone if you'd used pliers on your phone, either. I didn't say it was foolish to break his phone with the pliers, I said it was foolish to void his warranty by applying pliers to the broken switch.

And name calling is frowned upon on these forums. I would recommend that you fix your post to remove it.

Pretty sure that repeatedly driving the thread off-topic with vapid posts in an attempt to demean others is also frowned upon.
 
Go to a different Apple Store. Check if you have hairline cracks. If so tell them to fix the crack and they will replace the phone.

Now here's my observation. Apple helps fix/replace the phones in some areas. (sfo, lax.. etc). If u try the same in NY or NJ. they will give you a run around. I had a friend in NJ who genuinely had a battery issue and the genuis sent her back twice without a replacement.
