iPhone Finally, a way to COMPLETELY silence the iPhone!

One of my annoyances is that the ringer mute switch will not silence alarms.

So, I was happy to hear of DisAlarm, a tweak in Cydia that will disable your alarms when you activate it, a few days ago. I installed it because the dev promised a flip switch for it and the dev delivered on that the other day.

So…now what I am doing is setting DisAlarm for a high number of minutes. 1440 to be exact. 24 hours. I've used Activator to attach the Do Not Disturb flip switch AND the DisAlarm flip switch to my ringer mute switch.

Activates when muted, deactivates when unmuted. Complete and TOTAL silence of all sounds including alarms when the ringer switch is muted! Since I have DisAlarm set for 24 hours the one alarm I have set will never go off if the mute switch is on.

I understand that I am in a minority here, but finally jailbreaking delivers the behavior I want.

Great that you share your setup for others that might also need a way to completely silence the iPhone.

Personally I actually prefer the standard behavior, If I set up an alarm I wanna hear it even if the phone is muted :)

Wow man that is awesome. What a creative way to combine all the available tweaks! That's what jail breaking is all about! I love when multiple tweaks work in harmony for a simple solution that solved something that you personally find annoying. Thanks for sharing! I'm gonna try this setup for myself.
 
What's the point of setting any in the first place if you don't want to hear them? Why not just set them as reminders..those are silenced when the mute switch is on.

I have one alarm that goes off every school morning. My phone serves as my alarm clock. A reminder will go off once. I won't hear it, especially since the tone I use for reminders is a soft tone.

My alarm on the other hand I better wake up and turn off because if I let it go and it wakes my wife up…:eek:

I serve as the alarm clock for everyone else in my house so I need to be woken up at the correct time each day as my six year old and my eleven year old do not pay any attention to clocks.

But I hate having to go into the Clock app to disable the alarm. Especially when I sometimes set semi-permanent alarms that happen during the daytime and evening.

So, this works for me this way.

I get it that others prefer the Apple way, but I came over from a Windows Mobile phone and I'm used to the way it works there.

Yeah, it's nice to finally have a way to make the damn thing totally silent. :D
 
Nice, I never thought of attaching it to the mute switch like that, for complete silence.

Are you still on iOS 7? I can't test anything on iOS 7 and I haven't had confirmation that DisAlarm actually work on it.

I'm not sure I get the point either. If the person wants a notification without the noise, that's what Reminders\Calendar Events are for. If someone wants to be awaken or notified with audio, that's what the alarm is for. I don't get the point of a silent alarm unless you're trying to catch a burglar.

The tweak was originally written for people like myself who set multiple alarms for the morning, a few minutes apart. Sometimes I actually get out of bed after the first one and I don't want the other alarms to go off. If I go into the clock app and turn them off, I sometimes forget to turn them back on before the next morning. Now, I can tap a button on screen when the first alarm goes off to temporarily disable all of my alarms for the next 60 minutes.

Or, following along with the OP, let's say you have a daily alarm set for 4pm but today, you're called into a meeting around 4 and don't want the alarm to go off but don't want to actually turn it off, since you might forget to turn it back on. With DisAlarm, you can temporarily disable it.

I guess, but the mere fact that you're picking up your phone and toggling on\off the alarm silencer seems like it'd just make more sense to toggle the actual alarm on\off. But hey, some people don't mind 6 steps to save 6 steps. Just seems like more hassle than it saves IMO.

How is it 6 steps to save 6 steps? When my alarm goes off, I tap 1 button on my screen and all of my following alarms are disabled for 60 minutes.

The other way, I have to tap 1 button to stop my alarm, unlock my device, open the clock app, turn off 2 alarms, lock my device...Sometime later in the day, unlock my device, open the clock app, turn on two alarms, lock my device.

Or you could press the button that says Snooze... either way you have to open the phone later and follow-up.

Hey, whenever I stroll down the aisles at Target I wonder "who buys this junk?" ... I guess there's a market for everything, and different things have different value to others.

That makes absolutely no sense. Pressing snooze sets another alarm to go off in 9 minutes. The point is to keep more alarms from going off, not add another one.

No you don't. That's the whole point. With DisAlarm, you tap 1 button when the alarm goes off and all alarms are automatically disabled for 60 minutes and automatically enabled after that.
 
Glad that some find it helpful but its seems pretty pointless to me.
If I set an alarm or alarms I want to hear them even when my phone is on mute. So I can wake up and go to work or be notified at certain times.

How is this six steps or so?

Flip the mute switch to mute. All alarms, all notifications, all ringers - muted.

Flip the mute switch back to unmute. Everything's back on again. One step.

Before, I would have to enter my pin code to unlock my phone, access my Alarm app and then switch the alarm off, exit the app and then relock my phone.

How is that easier?

Right! And with the flip switch you can shut off alarms that you know will be coming up without ever having to enter the Clock app and then turn them back on as well.

Yes, I am on 7.1.2. My understanding is that DisAlarm was made for iOS 8, but the dev said it should work on iOS 7, although he had not tested it.

It works for me. Had something to do this morning at 6:29am. My alarm was set for 6:30. DisAlarm killed it with a few seconds to spare.

Maybe that's the difference. If I was asleep, I'd want to hear the alarm too. But generally, if I am trying to silence a pending alarm before it happens it's because I am already awake and do not wish to have the alarm disturb anything.

Otherwise, I'd just leave DisAlarm disabled and the alarm would go off on schedule.

I see.
Im not usually awake before the alarm goes off.
And when it does I just put my finger on the touch ID and the alarm shuts off.

I hear you…

Imagine this scenario though, which is very much my reality.

1. Wife takes a very poor view of being awakened by my alarm.
2. I get up early because I woke early and decide to take a shower or leave the room to make coffee.
3. My phone is still on my nightstand acting as a clock and so I am not in the room when my alarm goes off…
4. Wife is now pissed and yelling (at the very least).

Fumbling around in the dark to disable the alarm using the Clock app (if I even remember) was my reality until this tweak.

Half the time I'll remember while I'm in the shower. Only to encounter an angry wife who can't turn off my alarm when I get out of the shower.

So…yeah, this works for me. :D

I still say it's simple enough if you wake up before the alarm, just turn it off. LOL... not rocket science. But the beer can helmet sold to a lot of people so I guess not everyone goes for simplicity.

Do you want things to be just simple enough or should they be even simpler? If you want to go to the clock app, turn your alarm off and then remember, sometime later in the day, to turn it back on, then by all means, go right ahead and continue to do that.

How you prefer to use your device is a matter of fact and not up for debate. However, your argument that your way is "simple enough" and therefore there is no reason to use a method that is even simpler doesn't make much sense.

Another example:
Why bother using TouchID? A passcode is simple enough to type in.
 
If you plug some headphones in, no sound plays through speakers. You could stick a little stub of a 1/8" cable in there and leave it. :D

Or I can use this tweak and not have to worry about a little plug every time I want total silence. :D

Your example is horrible. TouchID isn't for simplicity, it's for security. Try again.
