Just got the sneak peak version of Gmail 4.2 apk from Android Police and I can finally recommend this as being a worthy email client! Only took Google how long?

New features:
swipe right and left to delete or archive a message
Pinch to zoom on pictures or text in an email
View full emails, like it should have been from day 1 (No scrolling left or right any more to see the full images on your screen. Used to be if an image was to big, the image wouldnt scale to fit your screen. Now it does. Finally!)

So, how can you get this? You have to be rooted and have something like root explorer installed so you can alter permissions in your data/app folder (or whereever your apk's are stored.) And here is the link if you are confident in your Android jedi skills:

By the way, if you are not rooted, the official GMail update will be coming to the Play Store soon.

Yep. It's great. Finally pinch to zoom. Was one of the biggest things I missed from ios. Plus the Swype to delete is also handy.

Very happy overall. Let's see now what 4.2 brings.

I think we are probably starting to see the first fruits of Google's acquisition of Sparrow in this Gmail update. Can't wait for it to be released on the Play Store.

Any ideas how soon is soon? I'm rooted and I'm confident enough that I can install this without screwing up anything or just reverting back to a titanium backup of the app if I do, but I'd still rather wait for the official release :p

Edit: took the plunge and installed it. Working fine so far and this was a much needed update.

Great point. I had forgotten about Sparrow. I was actually hoping to see Sparrow on its own, but if it is integrated into GMail, like we are seeing that works for me.
Email clients on Android have been disappointing up until now. I am very happy to see this.
