Finally got my 17" Macbook Pro

Well its finally arrived and man is this thing fast.
My old computer was a 667mhz DVI G4 Tibook and it crawls in comparison.

As an example I bought a new ipod nano two weeks ago and converting an episode of heroes to ipod format with visualhub used take anywhere from 60min to 90min. Last night i ran off an episode of heroes in 5min!!! This thing screams.

Just for anyone considering getting a 17", so far i don't find it any more cumbersome to carry round than my 15 incher.

Yeah, it's a real beaut! I myself came from a 867mhz 12" PB, it would take about 30 hours to do 1 work unit on SETI, my 17" IIRC, takes 1 hour for each WU.

simpsons ep in VH for ipod classic, 3 mins flat.

About the cumbersome-ness: definitely isn't an everyday going to uni laptop, that's for sure.

PS: as a small fact of how far you've come, the FSB of the SR MBP is faster than the CPU of your old laptop!

Haha, yeah. I found out the hard way. I was flying into Chicago last week for a shoot and I was luggin' around my cameraman's 17" MBP. I left my 15"er at home since we only needed one computer.

It was fine, at first, but it eventually became more bothersome, especially since we had to take it with us on location. It is definitely not a "take with you everywhere" notebook. The screen real estate is nice though. But that's what a Dell Ultrasharp is for ;)

I had the chance to get the 17" 2.33GHz about a year ago and I settled on the 15" because of the size of the 17" and all the people I talked to that had one wished they went 17 inches.

I have a great opportunity to get either a SR MBP or a newer model easy and I am stuck on the same decision. I would love to have the built-in screen real estate but other than that there isn't anything separating the 15" and 17" models. Some people love the 17" and say that it isn't that much harder to carry and use in places, and others have problems with it. I guess I am just going to have to carry one around for a day or two to find out.
 
just wanna ask why not wait for Leopard's release? (to save a few tens of bucks)
 
I bought it because I wanted it now and I tend not upgrade to a new OS straight away so that the kinks can be worked out.
Besides Tiger is actually very good
 
I have been agonizing over whether to get the 15 or the 17; I want the matte high resol. screen bc I do a lot of photography edits.

Am switching from PC and am so close to the Leonard release that I probably should wait. I am mixed, though, on whether to wait and then have to work out any bugs or whether to order the Mac now (online) with Tiger and upgrade later. Of course, depending on the final release date, it may be a moot point; it may ship with Leonard.

2 GHz or 4 GHz of RAM---have received different advice. I tend to multitask and have everything open at once (almost) and I will be working with video in addition to photos.
